As I gazed out the large window, the DA thought he should speak up. “Mr. Grant, I—”
“Did I say you could talk?”
Silence greeted me. Good. I wasn’t ready to hear what his ass had to say.
Three days ago, I had to leave Yara’s house suddenly because Aniya decided to skip out on the drop I had set up for her. The woman had lost her damn mind, so I had to go convince her stupid ass to go. Kyle called me this morning, asking to meet. I’d taken my time getting here because I had to prepare for him to say some bullshit. If he told me that there was another setback, I knew I would lose my shit.
After a couple of minutes, I slowly turned back around and steepled my fingers together. “Why am I in this fuck-ass office right now?”
Kyle’s mouth opened and closed several times before he cleared his throat and finally spoke. “It’s good news, Mr. Grant.”
I leaned forward, my interest piqued. “You gonna keep it to yourself or speak?”
“I-I . . . I was able to get the evidence to the commissioner from the last drop. This makes seven drops in the last year that we can tie Aniya to. He was suspicious before, but he wants to bring her in for questioning now.”
My brows rose. Kyle smiled triumphantly. I knew he was happy to put this all behind him. Hell, if he pulled this off before his two-week deadline, I’d send him a hundred-thousand-dollar bonus out of the kindness of my heart.
“Is that right?”
Kyle nodded enthusiastically. I could tell he had been bursting at the seams to give me this information.
“All you need to do is make sure all the files and call logs are in place, so when they do a search, everything leads back to her, and nothing points at you. You’re quite sure there’s nothing to make you look guilty? Because now that the commissioner wants to pull her in, there’s no going back. They won’t just be looking at her. They’ll look at you.”
I stood, ignoring his question. I had all my ducks in a row. I made sure my alibis were airtight and that all planted documentation in her office pointed to her. There was nothing in our home that tied me to the illegal shit I’d been doing since I was a teen. The cherry on the top was that all the accounts with the large sums of money in them were in her name. It was true that I would lose over a million dollars in all this, but I couldn’t sweat it. The accounts here in America had always been in her name. And I never used them. Not even before I knew about her conniving ass. Those accounts had always been for her, while I only used the hidden offshore accounts. Not even the FBI could find those bitches. Those accounts held well over ten million dollars, so if a million was the price I had to pay to both get rid of Aniya and teach her a lesson, then so be it.
“When do they plan on making the arrest?” I asked as I stared down at the frail old man. He should really retire after this. I’d allow it since I planned to go completely legit. I was tired of running the streets and ready to enjoy retirement myself.
“Wednesday.”
“Wednesday,” I muttered. Two days away. He’d made good on his two-week deadline. My guess was that he had begged the commissioner to arrest Aniya sooner rather than later. Good call on his part. “Call me if anything changes.”
With that, I strode out of the office and out of the building. As soon as I got into my car, I called Turbo.
“Yo.” His voice filled the car as I pulled out of my parking spot.
“They makin’ that move on Wednesday. Make sure ya shit is in order.”
“Bet. What you ’bout to do?”
We both knew not to say too much over the phone, though I had an underground tech guy running interference on our phones to make sure that even if we were tapped or recorded, the signal would be skewed. Couldn’t be too careful.
A grin tugged at my lips. “Goin’ to see my baby.”
Turbo snorted. “You talkin’ ’bout ya lil crush.”
“My future wife, you mean?”
“Man, you don’t want to spend some time single? I ain’t seen that since high school. You don’t wanna be a free agent?”
I’d thought about that as well, but the automatic response was hell no. There wasn’t shit out here for me in these streets. Not money-wise or pussy-wise, as far as I was concerned.
I felt in my gut that Yara was it for me. Why would I waste my time? I’d had an entire year to get over the heartbreak Aniya handed me. A whole year to process the end of our relationship. I may have still been married, but in my head, I had been single for a long time, so this didn’t feel like rushing to me. It felt right. It felt like the next phase of my life was just around the corner.
“Nah. I’ma hit you later, though.” I didn’t wait for a response before I hung up the phone.
It didn’t take long for me to pull up to the office building. I parked and got out of the car. As I strode through the double doors, my mind drifted back to Yara, as it often did. I couldn’t wait to fill her in on everything. I’d let her know there were feelings on my end a few days ago, but I wanted to tell her more. I wanted to tell her everything. Not only that, but I also wanted the chance to really date her. I hadn’t lied when I told her she was my favorite girl. Fuck Aniya. My mama might have something to say about that sentiment, but I couldn’t deny the truth that Yara held that spot since the moment I laid eyes on her through the cameras I had set up over a year ago.
As soon as I got off the elevator on the floor Yara worked on, the grin I had fought off since I thought of coming to see her broke through. Aniya had taken another personal day. She claimed she needed it after being forced to do a drop. I really didn’t give a fuck, especially since it gave me free range to pull up on Yara.
