When The Fair Goes Dark

Don’t get me wrong. I may be mad and angry at my father, but I wasn’t a liar. She was pretty. Very pretty.

Her long red hair was tied up in a bun and she had on a matching lounge set of some kind. She was pretty, but she wasn’t my mom.

“Thank you.” I say, trying to be polite and leave.

“You will be back at eight, right?”

I stare up at her. What was their problem about being home at eight?

“Yep.” I say, quickly and turn to to go out the front door.

“Okay! Have fun and be safe.” she calls out as I close the door.

Looking out, I see a small gray Pontiac grand prix sitting in the driveway. Willow was standing outside the door, looking so cute in her little outfit.

It was the same high waisted shorts, but with a regular t-shirt cut up instead of the bookstores.

Her fluffed hair looked extra pretty and she had bangles up and down her arms.

“Girl! You look so good.” she says as she walks over and hugs me.

I wrapped my arms around her and just felt comfort. I just met this girl and I already feel like I’ve known her for a lifetime. I cant help but wonder if this is how it feels to become best friends at a glance.

“You do too.”

The sun was still shining and illuminating our skin.

“I am so excited! I get super happy when they open up. Its the last weekend for the summer.”

She opens the passenger door as she continues talking about the fair.

“My friends are meeting us up there. Climb on in.” she says.

Sliding in, I notice the smell of flowers and bath and body works fills my nostrils. I close the door and watch as she rounds the car.

The time on her radio showed it was 6 P.M. already.

She climbs in and we take off away from my driveway.

“Your car is so cool.” I say as I put on my seatbelt.

“Thank you girl. It was only like 2,000 bucks at a shop in town. Super cheap.” she says as she turns on her music.

I watch as the trees pass us, and I started to get a little nervous at being around so many new people.

Being around Willow was kind of easy since she was very extroverted as I’ve noticed, where I was more introverted.

My closest friend at my high school was the English teacher that let me eat lunch in her classroom.

“So…..” I start. “How many friends of yours are coming?”

“Uhh maybe like five?”

Five?

Okay, that wasn’t too bad.

“But, don’t worry. They are super chill.”
