When The Fair Goes Dark

Page 8

by Lafaye June

The last one was when our family was a whole. The memories of our smiling faces on the Ferris wheel and getting popcorn. The distant memory now washed away by the reality of our family being ripped apart by my fathers selfish actions.

I look back at the mirror to see what others see. My long hair was wavy from the braids I had them in earlier and flew down to my belly button. I needed a hair cut so bad.

I had on a loose black tank top with a skull on it, and some blue shorts with rips in them. It was a classic fair look, and I topped it off with some black converse.

It was practical and easy.

My skin had a light fresh tan from the sun, and I put on some chap stick so my lips weren’t chapped.

My phone buzzed and I looked at it to see my mom messaged me.

“Have fun at the fair tonight. Love you xoxo.”

Tears fill my eyes as I read it again, and I text her back how much I love her. I called her earlier and told her what I was doing, and I couldn’t help but feel a little guilt at having fun without her.

But, then my aunt grabbed the phone and told me they were going to the movies tonight.

It made me feel a little better.

A new message appeared from Willow.

“We are here.”

I replied, and slid it in my jean shorts.

You will have fun tonight, I tell myself in the mirror.

No thinking of your dad tonight.

No thinking of Marie tonight.

No thoughts, just fun with some new friends.

I walk downstairs, and go find Ryan so I can give him a hug.

I find him in the living room, playing on the new game system that my father and Marie bought to win over his heart.

Mine was not so easily winnable.

“Ryan bub.” I say as I walk over to him on the couch.

“Hey Rave.” he says, and sets the controller down.

“I’ll be back later okay. If you need anything, use your phone to call me, okay?”

He had a little TracFone my mom got for him the second she found out we were leaving. Just in case.

It only had mine, hers, and my fathers number on it.

He looks up at me before smiling. “Okay. I love you.”

“I love you too.” I say, and kiss the top of his fluffy hair.

I head out to the front door before I’m stopped from a voice coming down the stairs.

“Oh wow, Raven. You look pretty.” Marie says to me.

I stop in my tracks as I twist and turn to look up at her.
