When The Fair Goes Dark

She says something to someone in the background. “Oh! I think I see you.”

I peer through my windshield until I see her with several people walk over to me.

“I see you too.” I say with a smile, and disconnect.

She comes fully into frame, and what I see makes me smile with joy.

Her curly hair was pulled into a curly bun, and she was wearing a long tank top with a pair of jean shorts. She had necklaces on and combat boots. Overall, she looked so cute.

Grabbing my keys, I turn the vehicle off and step into the warm, summer air.

Willow whistles. “Damnnn girl. What a sweet ride this is.” she says with open arms to give me a hug.

I hug her back as I look at the red beauty.

“It’s just my dads.”

“Well, your dad has great taste.”

“I guess so.” I say with a laugh.

“Mary mother of fuck.” I hear from around me, and turn to see Charlie looking at me.

It seems like he did get cuter over the last year too.

“Hey Charlie.” I say, trying my hardest not to blush because I knew whatever he was about to say, was going to be crazy.

He was wearing a black sweater with a pair of jeans, and his brown curly hair was a little shorter than last time I saw him.

He stands near me and his eyes slowly trail down the length of my body.

“Damn Raven.” he says.

“What?”

“You look incredible.” he said with awe in his voice. “Like mesmerizing.”

My eyes drift to my white shoes. “Thank you.”

His compliment was nice and appreciated, but there was something missing from it. Like the feeling that rushed through me last year at this same place.

“You plan on staying for the carnival?” he asks me, stepping closer.

I raise my head to look at him. “I am.”

His face breaks out in this huge grin, and his eyes look like they sparkle.

“That’s great.”

I nod my head as I search his eyes for whatever I was feeling. It felt like my answer really pleased him for some reason.

“Okay, that’s enough.” Willow says as she puts an arm around me. “You remember Justin.” she points to the tall man next to her.

“Of course.” I say with a smile.

He just smiles a little back but directs his eyes back to Willow.

She whispers into my ear. “We are on a break.”
