He sets me down, asking if I remember anything, and I don’t. I hardly remember the car ride. I remember he told me that if I answered some questions, he’d free my restraints. But he didn’t, and that’s when I truly lost myself. That was when Jenny came to me. I woke up here and told Dr. Hart I didn’t want any visitors. Jay and Cam were in that room with me, but I couldn’t look at them. I still don’t know if I can.
“You saw Jenny?”
My brows furrow. “She—this is going to sound so fucking crazy. She told me to thank you for picking the weeds on her plot.” His jaw drops. “And that…something about not worrying about your family. That your found family will take care of you. You never have to worry about those things with them…” My gaze finds his stunned eyes. “Us,” I correct. “You never have to worry about those things with us.”
“That’s impossible,” he whispers, shaking his head.
“You talked to her about that? You actually pulled the weeds from her plot?”
His nod is faint, his eyes glassy.
There’s pacing outside the door. I chuckle while he walks over, opening it. I still wasn’t ready, so I do the only thing my body knows how to do right now and cry.
“She wasn’t doing that before I opened the door,” Micky says, panic lacing his voice.
“Mik, not your fault,” I sob.
I look up from my hands to a pair of very dark eyes and a pair of hazel eyes staring at me, as if I might break. And I feel like I might.
“I’m here. I’m okay.” I make a face, scrunching my nose. “Well”—I wave my hands around—“as okay as I can be given all this.”
Jared is the first to approach. He kisses my forehead softly, then my lips, just as gently. He pulls back with tears in his eyes. “You came back. You were so far gone, Indy. I didn’t know…” He chokes back a sob. “I didn’t know if you’d come back for us.”
“I always come back,” I whisper.
Cam stays planted at the door. He’s not angry. The grief on his face is like a spear to my chest.
“I saw you in the hall,” I explain, and his brow arches as he tilts his head. A tiny spark of light livens his eyes. “I was doing a test, so I couldn’t acknowledge you. When I looked back out the door, you were gone. I thought maybe I was crazy, until Lain came in with that comb.”
A rush of air leaves his lungs, clearing the distance between us. He plants a kiss on the top of my head. “I’m sorry. I told you I would keep you safe, and I failed you.”
I shake my head. “Cam, no. I was arrested. He was supposed to take me to Deacan County. He kidnapped me. There was nothing you could do.” He looks completely defeated.
“He’s being held on those charges, but more will come, Indy. Asher has gone back to the city to work on this case. Ken is out there—”
“Yeah, Dr. Reese said he’ll be present for some of our appointments later today. He’s going to represent me?”
“I want to, but this negates any conflict of interest.”
I nod and turn my gaze toward Jared. “Jay, you got me a doctor?”
He nods once.
“He fought the ER doctor about the one here,” Cam says, and I chuckle softly.
“Do you remember anything?” Jay’s voice is shaky when he asks. I shake my head as Mik tells them what I know, leaving out the part about Jenny. I don’t know if he doesn’t believe me or if he wants to leave that part just for us.
“Have the doctors or nurses told you anything?” Jay asks.
“Not really.”
CHAPTER 39
JARED
She’s here. She came back. It takes everything in me not to sob when she laughs. It might be overly dramatic, but a part of me thought I’d never hear that again, not with how far away she was. There was nothing behind those emerald eyes of hers. And it scared me.
“You need to put us down as emergency contacts, and we need to get a Power of Attorney for you to sign and put into place immediately. They won’t tell us anything, Indy.” Cam blurts, and I can’t help but huff an exasperated laugh. All eyes turn to me. “What?”
