"We'll figure out how to be lucky.”
She shook her head, looking away. "Mated werewolves are needier, physically. They need to be cuddled and shit. They have a hard time being away from their vampire."
"I can learn how to be cuddly. Mated vampires are needier, too."
"Not really. They just collect clothes and stuff. God knows you already have a stash of my things in your nest. I'm missing at least six sports bras right now, and the number of extra compression shirts I've had to buy is eye-watering."
"You like buying compression shirts. You have them in every color they offer. You even bribed your favorite brand to make a dark purple one."
Her face reddened. "You shouldn't know that."
"I know most things about you, Yorkie."
The door opened, and Lisa came in. There was a man with her that I recognized vaguely. He was another physical therapist, but he didn't work closely with the team.
The male therapist handed me a clipboard.
"This paperwork gives us your consent to touch your mate," he explained.
He was careful not to look at Carmen, which was a wise choice. The man wasn't built the way I was. I could do a hell of a lot of damage to him before Carmen managed to get me off him.
She made a sound of irritation, undoubtedly pissed that they were asking me for consent that applied to her body. Had I not been fantasizing about killing the man just for being close enough to touch her, I would've understood her irritation.
But his life was at risk. Lisa's was too, for that matter.
"That looks like a lot of paperwork. How long is this going to take?" Carmen asked.
The man started to look at her, but caught himself, refocusing back on me. They didn't usually talk around their patients, but this was a unique situation.
"It'll go quick," Lisa assured her. "We flagged the pages that require a signature. I can run you through most of the exercises while Oliver signs them."
Carmen's nose wrinkled.
My lips twitched.
She did that every time someone used my first name. She'd decided years ago that it didn't fit me. No one close to me used it, so she wasn't the only one who thought that way.
"I'm going to need you to send this to my lawyer instead," I told the guy, handing back the clipboard. "I'm not signing anything that applies to my situation with my mate, without my lawyer reading it first."
The man looked at Lisa.
She nodded at him. "Take him to Kelsie for the lawyer's information. We do need to start on Carmen's exercises as soon as possible to make sure the healing goes well. Especially if she has vampire venom in her system?" She glanced at Carmen for confirmation.
Carmen nodded, but her jaw was clenched.
The male therapist gestured for me to follow him outside.
I looked at Carmen first. "Are you comfortable with me leaving you right now?"
She met my gaze. "Leaving me isn't the problem."
It took me a minute to figure out what she wasn't saying.
The guy was going to take me to someone named Kelsie. There was a fair chance that she was the woman at the reception desk.
I looked back at the man in the doorway. "You can bring your coworker in here, or I can write down my lawyer's information for you to take to her."
There was a pause before he said, "I'll go grab Kelsie right now."
