The residents of Sunshine Cove draw back, stunned to see so many leather-wearing alphas who ignore the birds that rule here but steal an omega off the street. The women look as tough as the men. There are so many of them, they block out everyone, and I can see the betrayal in the eyes of Sunshine Cove.
I lied to them.
I brought this down on them.
I hurt four of their own. They won’t help me.
My shoulders slump.
“Dad, please, I need to say goodbye,” I whisper.
“Don’t make this harder than it is. Let’s just have a conversation at home. We can talk about it. Discuss things.”
I stare at him stubbornly. “I’m coming back.”
“We’ll talk about things,” he repeats, but I know we won’t. He never changes his mind, and he had this wonderful plan of us living with the club and being one big family. Dad won’t let me go.
The last of my resistance leaves me.
I ignore the murmured greetings from the bikers. Hands slide over my head, but where once it was comforting, now it feels invasive and wrong.
“Harvest!” Dad barks out.
The alpha turns away from watching Gian disappear and smiles, hiding all his emotions.
“Fine. Let's ride.”
I go with them, but then I hear a bark. I turn and Spectre slams into me.
“No! Don’t hurt him!” I shout.
The bikers put their fists down and watch as I hug the dog.
“I’m sorry, Spectre.” With a sob, I lean in, putting my lips to his ear. “I’m coming back. I promise, you make sure you look after him, but I will be back.”
I step back from the dog and then get on the back of Harvest’s bike.
I don’t look back; I’m afraid if I do, I won’t be able to leave.
Chapter 34
Jace
She doesn’t look back. Not once. I watch, standing on the side of the road, hoping to hear the purr of the bikes come back this way. But they don’t. She doesn’t come back.
It was all a lie.
Everything was…and I…
“Darling, I know that you had plans and hopes that things were going to work out, but I think you’ll find this is best.”
I turn to find my mother standing beside me, her hand on my arm. I have no idea when she got there. Where is Clint? Zaire? Felix?
I look around, but it’s just me and my mother.
With a barely restrained growl, I pull her arm off me and walk away. My heart is suddenly pounding in my chest. This can’t be the end. I won’t let it be the end.
Felix.
