CHAPTER 34

ANGEL

Ileft Sophie and went straight to Gabriels. We have a lot to discuss. The trouble is, my mind is in that car with Havoc and Sophie, and my mood is dangerous. Why am I such a fucking bastard? The only person affected by this is me.

This time he’s in his den and I sigh to myself.

I hate his den.

As I head inside, he is facing the window, gazing out across his beautiful garden that spills down to the lake. He has a direct view of the cemetery from here and I shiver inside.

“Gabriel.”

He doesn’t turn, but his voice is low and his tone is gruff.

“One stalker down, one to go.”

“What are you talking about?”

I sincerely hope he’s not referring to me in any way. I may be deceiving Sophie, but I would never stalk her. Okay, perhaps I am in putting eyes on her wherever she goes, but that’s for her protection.

I shake away the image and take my usual seat when I’m in here.

“So, there are two.”

He spins his chair around and I note the weariness around his eyes, and he pushes a glass of whiskey toward me.

“Isn’t it a little early for alcohol?”

I raise my eyes and he shrugs.

“It’s her birthday today.”

“I know.”

We raise our glasses.

“To Nicole.” He says, no emotion, just resignation.

“To mom.”

I drain the glass and wonder if I should say something. The last time I tried, he wouldn’t speak to me for weeks. That may be to my advantage, but despite what I think, I need his knowledge, especially now.

“Are you aware of his identity, assuming it is he?”

I return to business. It’s safer ground.

“No.”

“Then how can you be sure he’s still out there?”

“Because another bouquet was delivered to Sophie’s dressing room this morning. I understand the driver was stopped for questioning by one of your men. They are doing their job. You are to be commended for that.”

“Then you are more informed than me.”

I set the glass down, careful to place it on the coaster. Gabriel’s desk is an antique. It belonged to a famous author and is one of his most treasured possessions.

“The party tonight.”
