Chrome looked up as Howler appeared through the smoke behind them. “What happened?” he asked.
Moon pointed at Mayhem. “He needs to go to the clinic.”
Mayhem groaned. “Again?”
“Yes,” Moon said.
Chris lifted a hand weakly from the ground. “Take him.”
Moon looked at her. “I’m not leaving you.”
Christmas’s mouth curved. “You brought me back to life; I’d say your work is done here, Doc.”
“You’re not stable,” Moon insisted.
“Neither is he,” Chris said, pointing to Mayhem. Damn her—Moon hated when Chris was right.
Tempest touched Moon’s shoulder. “I’ve got her.” Moon hesitated, and Tempest’s eyes softened. “Go.” Moon nodded.
She looked at Chrome. “You stay with her.”
He didn’t hesitate. “Wasn’t planning on moving.” Chris muttered something beneath the oxygen mask, and Chrome leaned closer. “What?”
“I said stop looking at me like that,” Chris said.
“Like what?” he asked.
“As if I scared you,” Chris insisted.
“You did.” Chris stared at him, and Moon knew that her protector wouldn’t let her out of his sight.
She grabbed Mayhem’s hand. “Walk.”
“Yes, ma’am,” Mayhem said. Normally, she would have threatened him, but she didn’t have the energy. They made it halfway across the lot before Mayhem stumbled.
Moon caught him. “Mayhem.”
“I’m okay,” he lied.
“No, you aren’t,” she insisted.
“You say that a lot,” he pointed out.
“Because you keep proving me right,” she said. His weight became heavier against her, and Moon wrapped an arm around his waist. The black veins had climbed nearly to his shoulder, and her pulse raced. “Stay with me.”
“Not going anywhere,” Mayhem insisted.
“You’d better not.” He looked down at her. Even half-dead, the idiot smiled at her.
“You worried?” he asked.
Moon stopped walking. “Are you serious?”
“Little bit,” he said.
“You’re poisoned. I just restarted my VP’s heart. My clubhouse is on fire. Some ancient psychopath knows my mother, and there are rogue wolves trying to kill us.”
Mayhem nodded. “Busy night.” Moon stared at him, and then laughed, because she couldn’t help it. It came out shaky and sounded wrong, but Mayhem still smiled.
