Chris moved them. “Yes.”

“Hands?” she asked.

“Yeah,” Chris said.

“You nauseous?” Moon questioned.

“Yes,” Chris said.

“Do you have a headache?” Moon asked.

“It’s a bad one.”

“You probably have a concussion,” Moon warned.

“Great,” Chris grumbled.

“Don’t move,” Moon ordered.

Chris’s gaze shifted past Moon to Chrome, and something changed. Her humor disappeared. “Are you hurt?” she asked.

Chrome stared at her. “No.”

“You’re covered in blood,” she pointed out.

“It’s yours,” Chrome said. Chris went quiet, and he crouched closer. “Don’t ever fucking do that again.”

Her eyebrows lifted. “Do what?”

“Die,” Chrome said.

Chris smiled faintly. “Bossy.”

“Yeah.” Moon looked between them, and there it was again—that thing she had noticed before. It wasn’t a bond—not yet, but something else. It was something waiting to happen, and she couldn’t wait to see it take place.

Mayhem leaned close to Moon. “You seeing what I’m seeing?” he asked.

“Not now,” she whispered.

“That means yes,” he said. Moon elbowed him, and he grunted and then swayed. Moon turned instantly.

“Mayhem?” she said.

“I’m fine.” His face said otherwise. She grabbed his arm. The black veins were darker now—much darker.

“Damn it,” she spat.

“What?” he asked.

“You ran, and it made things worse,” she said.

“I didn’t shift,” he insisted.

“You strained yourself,” she said.

“Chris was dying,” he defended.

“And now you might be next.”
