I beamed at that. Hearing him repeat it made me giddy. I wanted to get up and dance a little jig. Nolan MacGregor loved me. I never thought I would hear those words out of his mouth.
“What was your mom’s name?” I asked.
“Norah. Why?”
“Norah…” I trailed off. “Norah MacGregor.”
He stared at me for a second while I rubbed my belly in thought. I really liked the sound of Norah MacGregor.
Nolan put a hand next to mine on my stomach, and I smiled up at him. I loved how protective he was of the baby and me. I knew he was going to be the best daddy to Peanut.
“I really like the name Norah,” I said and rolled around the name in my head.
Nolan cocked an eyebrow at me. “Okay…”
I could tell it wasn’t clicking with him what I was getting at. We hadn’t talked about names at all yet. I wanted to think about it some more, but the name had a really nice ring to it.
My stomach rumbled, breaking through the quiet in the cabin. We both laughed. I shrugged. “I guess I’m still hungry.”
Nolan stood up from the couch. “Let’s go get you some pie, huh?”
“Yay! I’m craving some right now,” I said and jumped up from my spot.
He laughed as we walked into the kitchen together. I got plates out, and he cut into the pie. We ate at the table, and Nolan furrowed his brow as he ate.
“What’s wrong?” I asked.
“This tastes familiar. Like… it tastes like my childhood.”
“Of course it does.”
He frowned. “What do you mean?”
“Your brother gave me the recipe. He said it was your mother’s favorite.”
His brown eyes got shiny at that.
“Nolan?”
“Really?” he whispered.
“Yeah?” I asked and chewed on my slice. It was fantastic. It was nothing too fancy or original, but I think I understood why he said it reminded him of his childhood. I hoped I did his mom’s recipe justice.
“She used to make it for my birthday.”
Oh.
Oh fuck, did I mess up here?
“I’m sorry.”
He jerked his head up. “For what?”
I gestured to the pie in front of him. “Reminding you of your dead mother. Shit, I messed up.”
He put a hand on my wrist. “No, baby. It’s good. It’s so good.”
Now I was confused.
