I sighed and toed off my high heels. I was still in my wedding dress, but I had tossed the floral crown in the backseat of the car an hour ago. We had stopped at a store for supplies, and it wasn’t until the cashier gave me a funny look that I realized I was still wearing it. I let Nolan bring our things into the house while I walked around, turning on the water and heat and making sure nothing was amiss. I took a much-needed bathroom break and then went to check on everything else.

I peeked into the fridge and was surprised to find it stocked. Until I saw the note on the counter in my sister’s handwriting.

Avery & Nolan,

Enjoy your honeymoon in the Poconos. I stocked the fridge, so you don’t have to worry about anything while you are boring people who do nothing!

Love,

Gemma

I shook my head at my sister’s antics, but a smile played across my lips. Gemma was a bit much, but she only did it because she loved me.

I climbed the stairs and went into the big bedroom that used to be my parents. I laughed when I saw the rose petals lying on the bed. Dad said he checked in on the place, but Gemma must have come with him. No way my dad did that.

I turned at the sound of Nolan’s laughter. “Gem’s doing?”

“Who else?”

He set our suitcases on the bed, and I unpacked our clothes into the dresser while he brought in everything else. When I walked back down the stairs, I saw Nolan had started a fire.

I sat on the couch and noticed the Christmas gifts on the coffee table. Nolan finished what he was doing and finally took off his boots. He sat on the couch next to me. He looked exhausted, so I reached out a hand and massaged his neck.

“Oh, that feels nice,” he moaned as I kneaded the tight muscles in his neck.

“Thank you.”

“No way was I letting my pregnant wife carry all our bags in,” he grumbled at me.

I squeezed his neck teasingly. “You’re so difficult sometimes.”

He grunted, but then he handed me one of the bigger gifts. “Hey, we didn’t do our Christmas gifts yet.”

I took the gift from his hands.

I opened the box he handed me and was surprised to find he gifted me a year of a book subscription box. Inside was a new adult fantasy book, a lovely aromatherapy candle, quote cards, and a book hook to use as a bookmark.

“Oh, this is so cool! Open yours!” I said excitedly.

He pulled the heavy package I wrapped for him into his lap. “What is this?”

“You’ll see,” I said as I read the back of the book that came in the box.

That was thoughtful of him. And cool, because if he had asked me if I wanted a particular book, I would have shown him my impossibly long wishlist.

He tore open the package to reveal the craft beer of the month club subscription I bought him. Funny that we both went with subscription boxes for things we loved.

“Oh, this would be great for research,” he said and smiled at me.

“I didn’t know if that would be good for you or not.”

He kissed me. “It’s perfect. Oh, I got you something else.”

He handed me a smaller package. I had a feeling it was jewelry, and I hoped he didn’t spend a lot on it. I wasn’t into fancy jewelry, and our wedding bands had cost a lot. With him owning his own business and me on a teacher’s salary, we didn’t have a lot of money between us. I didn’t want him to spend a lot on me.

I smiled when I saw the bangle bracelet inside the tiny box with a couple of charms depicting a mushroom, a rabbit, a teacup, and the Cheshire cat. “Oh! It’s Alice in Wonderland! That’s my favorite.”

“I know.”
