Her face paled.
“Now, why am I here? Does your boyfriend think I have what he thought Rebecca had?”
Her chin quivered, then she nodded.
I let out a long sigh. “Is it a flash drive?”
Her eyes flew wide, then she recovered and whispered, “How did you know?”
I leaned into her ear and whispered, “I found one in Rita’s garage. In the pocket of a man’s denim jacket.”
She looked like she was about to pass out.
“Why would he think I have it?”
“He thinks you’re nosy. He doesn’t know that you have it, but he figures you’ve been poking around enough that you might have come across it.” Her voice dropped, barely above a whisper. “And you did.”
“Does he think I have it on me?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did you steal it from Tommy T?”
She made a face. “I wouldn’t say steal…”
“You took it from him, and he’s pissed. Which I found out when I went to Bueller’s on Sunday and asked for him. He told me you’d taken something of his. So, when we found the flash drive in your stuff in the garage, we figured that had to be it.”
“We?” she asked in a panic. “Who else knows about it?”
I shook my head. “I’m not tellin’.”
“This is not a game, Iris. Who has it?”
“Did Rebecca ever have it?” I asked. “Or did your boyfriend only think she did because you told him so?”
She looked stricken. “I can’t believe you’d accuse me of that.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“No, Iris,” she spat. “I did not lie that she had it. She actually had a drive.”
“Was it a copy?”
She twisted her hands in her lap, then looked up. “He’s gonna come in here and ask you where it is. You have to tell him.”
“Who else did he kill?” I asked in a cold tone. “Who was the man?”
I held my breath, terrified she’d tell me it was Boone’s brother.
“His name was Eddie,” she said, her voice breaking. “Dario thought he had it when they couldn’t get it from Rebecca.”
I tried to hide my relief. I wasn’t happy he was dead, but one of the few things I knew about Eddie was that he’d hit Rebecca. If I had to choose between him and Cody being murdered, I’d pick Eddie any day of the week.
I closed my eyes. This was bad, but there was no way I was giving them Boone’s name. Because the way I saw it, they were killing me either way. They couldn’t let me go. I knew too much, even if I only knew a little.
“Iris.” Selena grabbed my arms and shook me. “Fine, you don’t have to tell him where it is. But tell me.”
I couldn’t let myself believe her. “So you can tell him? I’m not up for a game of telephone.” I shook my head. “It still makes no sense that he’d think I have it. Why did he send someone to kidnap me on Saturday night? Did he send the guys who trashed my apartment last night?”
