She nodded, tears streaming down her face.
“What was he looking for, Selena?”
She seemed surprised by my stern tone, then turned sideways and took my hands in hers. “Eye. This is really important. What did you tell people?”
“You’ll have to be more specific, Lee,” I said, struggling to control my sarcasm. “I’ve talked to a lot of people over the last week.”
“About me?”
“What does it matter?”
“Because I think people might be looking for you.” She sounded so earnest, like she had no idea about Blond Mustache’s attempted kidnapping and the break-in at my apartment.
I started to laugh.
Horror filled her eyes. “This isn’t funny!”
“You think?” I asked through my laughter. “I think they found me.”
“What are you laughin’ about?” she snapped. “This is serious.”
I got ahold of myself and said, “I, of all people, know how serious this is. I’ve been having visions of my murder since your boyfriend popped into Stop-n-Go last Wednesday night. He murders me in every single one.”
She gasped and physically recoiled. “What?”
“And in every one, you’re there, watchin’ it happen.”
“I would never let him do that!” she protested.
“Did you stop him from murdering Rebecca?” I asked, my tone icy. “And who else did he murder? Garrett got called in for a second murder today. Your boyfriend’s been busy.”
She stared at me in disbelief, then shivered. “You can’t talk to him like that when he questions you later,” she whispered. “He doesn’t tolerate disrespect.”
“I’m sorry, but I’m not sure I can find it in me to be respectful to a cold-blooded murderer.”
“Iris!”
“Why am I here, Selena?” I asked. “Why did your boyfriend have me snatched?”
“Because you’ve been asking about me and Rebecca. It made him suspicious.”
“You could’ve answered my calls and texts,” I said. “Then maybe I would’ve stopped askin’ about you.”
She grimaced. “I thought if I ignored you, you’d let it go.”
I raised a brow. “Have you met me? I saw myself murdered and you were with the man who did it. Of course I wasn’t letting it go.”
“You worry about me too much.”
“It looks like I haven’t worried about you enough. How did you get mixed up with this guy?”
She leaned closer and lowered her voice. “I can’t get into that. The less you know, the better.”
“Selena,” I said, my voice catching. “It doesn’t matter what you tell me. I’m not leavin’ here alive.”
She vigorously shook her head. “No! I won’t let him hurt you.”
“You never stopped him in any of my four visions.”
