Jay glances at me. “Want to come over for dinner?”

“Sure.” Well, that was easy. “I’m on my way now.”

Jay pulls the phone away from his ear and stares at it. I start laughing.

He puts the phone back to his ear. “You’re kidding.”

“I’ll be there in five.”

The call ends.

Jay slowly lowers the phone. “Was he already on his way over? How did he know we were going to ask him to come over for dinner?” He gasps dramatically. “Do you think he bugged my house?”

I shake my head, smiling. “Five minutes?”

“Apparently.” Jay looks toward the front door like he’s already regretting this entire decision.

I pick up my wine and settle back into the couch. “Well, I guess I’m about to meet Shane.”

Jay looks at me. “You sure you’re ready?”

I grin. “Absolutely.”

Five minutes later, there’s a knock at the door.

Jay wipes his hands on a dish towel and heads for the door, muttering something under his breath before pulling it open.

“Hey.”

The second voice is followed by the sound of footsteps coming inside. “Smells good.”

“You’re early.”

“I said come over for dinner. I didn’t say sprint here.”

“I was nearby.”

Jay snorts. “You live twenty minutes away.”

“I said what I said.”

I smile into my wine.

So this is Shane.

Jay steps aside, and a man walks into the living room. He’s about my height, maybe a little taller, with dark hair that looks like he ran a hand through it on the way over. He’s missing an arm, but it's barely noticeable in the way he holds himself. He radiates confidence and comfort. There’s something immediately easy about him, though I can’t quite put my finger on what it is.

Then his eyes land on me, and his face lights up.

“You’re Vincent Buster Klein.”

“Buster?” Jay asks, his brow wrinkled in thought.

I blink, caught slightly off guard by the use of my full name. “Yeah.”

He crosses the room with a grin and holds out his hand. “Shane.”

I shake it. “Nice to meet you.”
