“Venom?” she asked.
“I’ve got you, baby,” he said.
He lifted her in his arms, and King and Diesel moved out of the way, as Gus climbed behind the wheel. Diesel got in front, as King slid into the back. Venom held her and he pulled off his leather cut and draped it over her, pressing his hand against her wound, which caused her to grunt.
“You ... came,” she said.
“Always. I will always come for you.”
“I’m ... so ... cold.”
“Turn the freaking heat up, Gus.”
“Dad?”
“I’m here, baby. I’m here and I’m not going to let anyone or anything happen to you again. I’ve got you.”
She let out a smile, but her teeth were covered in blood.
Venom knew that wasn’t good. None of this was good.
“I ... killed ... a ... couple ... of people ... tonight,” she said.
“I’ve got you. You don’t need to talk. You don’t need to worry about anything. We’re going to get you to the hospital and they’re going to fix you. I promise. They’re going to fix you.”
Everyone in the car was silent. Venom swiped at his eyes, because they had gotten blurry.
“I ... love ... you,” Morwenna said. “You ... broke ... my heart.”
“Stop, I love you too, Morwenna. I love you more than anything in the world, and I am a fucking asshole and I was doing all of this to avoid this. I was trying to protect you. I love you. You’re mine.”
“You ... love ... me?”
“Yes, with all my heart. I love you. You’re mine. You’re going to be mine, and when Bolt signs those divorce papers, you and I are going to make this happen. You’re going to be my wife.”
“I’d ... like ... that.” She nodded.
“Forgive me?” he asked. “Forgive me for trying to keep you safe. These past few weeks have been a nightmare, but I’m not going to let you go. Do you hear me? I am going to give you those babies you love so much.”
“I ... like ... babies,” Morwenna said.
She slumped into his arms, and he started to panic, pressing his fingers against her neck, feeling her pulse was very light, and he knew that couldn’t be good. He didn’t like this fear, nor the panic that swept over him. He gritted his teeth and tried to focus, but it was next to impossible. This was his woman.
He let out a scream just as Gus pulled into the emergency bay at the hospital. Venom didn’t know how, but doctors, nurses, and Maverick were waiting.
The door was opened, and Morwenna was taken from him, and he saw her in the fluorescent light of the hospital as she was rolled away. The blood had soaked through her clothes. At one point, her hand fell from the table, and Venom climbed out of the car. Morwenna had lost a lot of blood. She was close to dying.
He stood at the entrance of that hospital, watching, knowing this could be the last time he held the woman he loved.
Chapter Twenty
Morwenna was in a coma.
She died on the hospital table.
She had lost a lot of blood.
They were able to revive her, but the first twenty-four hours were critical.
