“You weren’t even that good of a fuck,” he said.

“Get out. Get out. Get out!” She picked up her cup and threw it at him.

He saw the pain and the anger in her eyes. He’d done what he needed to do, and now he took a step back, because she needed to steer clear of the clubhouse. “I wonder what Star’s like,” he said. “She’s got fire inside her, look what she did to your face.”

And he left.

Chapter Thirteen

Morwenna sat on the porch of her parents’ home and stared across the icy grass. It was a beautiful sight. Breathtaking. But she didn’t feel it, nor really see it.

All she kept hearing was the cold, harsh words Venom had spat her way. She couldn’t agree more with him, she had the worst taste in men. After Venom had come, ripped out her heart, crushed it beneath his foot, and humiliated her, her father arrived. He heard about the fight with Star and wanted to check on her. She asked if she could come home.

Staying at the ranch would be impossible now. She was tempted to put it up for sale. How could she stay in a home that had so many memories of Venom? Also, she struggled being there after dark on her own.

Tears filled her eyes as she thought about what had happened in the last week. She hadn’t seen Venom, or anyone else from the club. There hadn’t been any contact. Not even from Bolt. She didn’t go into town. Her parents didn’t make her, either. Her mother stayed and helped her work on a post for the blog. Her passion had dwindled. Her face ached. It just didn’t seem right anymore. She was broken.

It shocked her, how sad she felt. She’d felt hurt with Bolt, yet it hadn’t felt like this. Why did this one hurt so damn much?

At the sound of feet approaching, she didn’t even turn to look. It was either her mother or father. She continued to look at the cold, sharp grass. Not for the first time, she wondered what it would be like to be nothing more than a block of ice. She had a feeling it wouldn’t hurt like this. Blocks of ice were unfeeling. They were cold. Nothing could penetrate them but warmth.

“You shouldn’t be out here like this,” Gus said.

“I’m wearing a blanket.”

“It will only offer so much protection.”

She tried to hide her shiver. At this moment, she didn’t want to talk about anything.

“You and Mom are not doing a lot lately, why?”

“It’s cold. Your mother wants to stay home with you.”

“I can go back home,” she said.

“No, it’s fine. It’s good to have you in the house, and your mother is looking forward to having Thanksgiving with you here. You know she loves to cook a turkey, and she always gets a large one. The last few years we’ve ended up at the clubhouse to celebrate. This time, we can have a small family affair,” he said.

“It sounds nice.”

The bruise had come out of her eye completely, and it did look a mess, as did her split lip. Her nose, not broken, was red and swollen. She also went back to the sexual health clinic, which was so embarrassing as her father escorted her, and he wouldn’t accept anything less. She wanted to get tested, just in case Venom had lied to her. Everyone seemed to lie to her.

“Why are men pigs?” Morwenna asked. “Why can’t they just tell the truth and keep it in their pants? Why is it so hard?”

Her father sighed and took the seat beside her. “You know, some men are not what they seem.”

She laughed. “I’ve thought that and on more than one occasion, I’ve been so wrong.” She felt close to tears. “I can’t stand this.”

“Are you crying for Bolt?” he asked. “Or Venom?”

Morwenna turned to look at him, and she couldn’t help it, her face crumbled. It was more than she could stand.

“I was so wrong.”

“You weren’t wrong, honey.” He reached out and put a hand on her shoulder.

“I pick the bad ones. I’m swearing off men for life. That will be easier and my heart will not be broken because I will not give them anything to ... hurt.” She whimpered.

“You know, it’s going to be okay,” Gus said. “You’re going to get through this.”
