“You love him,” Venom said.

“And I hate him, and I’m starting to wonder if he sent you to fight for him?” Morwenna asked, putting a hand on her hip. “Did you actually bump into me on that bench, or did Bolt send you?”

“I’m no one’s messenger.”

“Then can we not talk about him, please? I just want to ... I want to not think about him, and the mess that is now my life. I’ve already got to start looking for a place to live and move my stuff out of his home.”

“Isn’t it partly your home as well?” he asked.

She shrugged. “I don’t want to live there anymore. I don’t want any part of that.” She held her hands up in surrender and shook her head. “I just want to be left alone right now. That is all I want. Now, I have double-chocolate orange brownies, and they are heavenly. We’ve got chocolate cake with fudge-buttercream frosting. Strawberry-cream cake. Take your pick,” she said. “Oh.” She held up a finger and opened the freezer. “Also, homemade cookies-and-cream ice cream. Let me know which one you would like.”

“Can I have a slice of all three, as well as a dollop of the ice cream?” he asked.

“You want all three?”

“Hell, yeah, if I can have all three, I’m not going to turn away from any.”

She laughed.

“Fine. All three it is.”

Chapter Five

“Your dad is going to be pissed,” Venom said.

“Yeah, well, he shouldn’t have made life difficult with the last apartment we went to see. You offered to help me pick a place, and here we are.”

“The last one was terrible. I was pretty sure there were roaches bigger than me,” Venom said.

Morwenna had no intention of asking Venom to help her find a place to rent or buy. She knew there were not a lot of available properties within Dwellers Point, but there were still plenty. Her father had been a pain in the ass at the three viewings he attended. He badgered the real estate agent and sent her crying into one of the bathrooms.

Her father didn’t want her to move out. She already heard him talking with her mother, that he feared her leaving would give Bolt the chance to win her over. None of them seemed to realize she was not going to be won over. Bolt hurt her.

In the past year, she didn’t cave once, not to any of his gifts or his sweet talk. In fact, she found it even more insulting that he would try to win her over, after everything. He lied, cheated, and she didn’t know who he was. He could look her in the eye and say one thing, but she would always wonder if he was being truthful or not. It was hard, because he was her best friend and he was the man who hurt her. She didn’t have anyone to confide in.

She was surprised with how comfortable she was with Venom. Even though her mother and father were shocked by his level of honesty, she found it so refreshing. She loved it. It felt good to be with someone who was honest. Especially after finding out the person she thought was honest with her was nothing but a big fat liar. That is what she hated. It sucked, big time.

“They were not that big.”

“Are you trying to say I’m fat?” he asked.

She rolled her eyes. She had come to see that Venom actually had a sense of humor and a playful side. She figured he didn’t show this to anyone. She did find him funny.

“I did no such thing.”

“Is that because I asked for seconds after eating all three slices of cake? Technically, a brownie does not count as a slice, it was a square.”

She laughed. “You took the strawberry and cream cake.”

“I can promise you I didn’t share it, and trust me, half the club were so jealous because I had one of your cakes.”

She looked around the apartment. “What do you think?” She missed cooking for the club. Running a blog with the extra food, it was hard to distribute it. Her parents’ neighbors, although grateful, had asked her to stop dropping off food. There was no choice but to slow down, but if she slowed down, her blog suffered.

“To what?” he asked.

“This apartment.”

“It’s small.”
