He frowned. “My picture?”

“The one your mother keeps in her purse. It is of you and me when we were both five years old. Kyle looks exactly like you. So, is that why the kids were so lovely when we had them over?”

This was not what he wanted to discuss.

“I think we should talk about our divorce and how to get our marriage back on track.”

“And I think we should talk about the three kids you’ve been able to hide and pretend don’t exist. How did you do it? How did you get them to stop calling you Daddy?” she asked.

He wanted to argue and not answer this question, but he also knew Wen was not going to let this go. Running a hand down his face, he looked at her, as she still held the roses in her hand. “I told them it was a game, that unless I was alone with them, they couldn’t call me Daddy. It was a respect thing, a club thing, and it made them good kids to call me Bolt,” he said.

“Wow,” she said.

“Wen, look—”

“Is it because I can’t have kids?” she asked. “Is that one of the reasons?”

This made him frown. “What the fuck? What makes you think you can’t have kids?”

“We’ve been trying and I can’t have kids. It’s why we got married,” she said.

“No, no, no, no, that is not why we got married,” he said, rushing toward her, but she backed up, and he saw she didn’t want him to hold her. “We got married because I loved you, and there was no one else.”

“No one else?” she asked. “You have three kids with a woman who is not your wife. I couldn’t have kids and we had been trying.”

She didn’t know. He closed his eyes as he saw the pain in hers, and it was eating away at him. There was a chance he could use this, but that was a lie. “We have not been trying, Wen.”

“What? Yes, we have, I threw out the birth control pills, and—”

“I kept giving them to you,” he said. “I just told you they were vitamin pills.”

Silence.

Seconds passed. Maybe even minutes before Wen finally spoke.

“What?” she asked. “You ... lied to me?”

“With Star and the three kids and everything, I was freaking out that if you got pregnant and realized that ours looked like Kyle ... I wasn’t ready for you to find out. Also, I didn’t want to share you with a child, because I know how demanding they are. They’re not easy. They’re fucking hard.”

“Get out,” Wen said.

“Wen, come on. You know you love it when I’m a selfish bastard and I want you all to myself.”

She threw the roses at him. “I want you to get the hell out of my house. I want you to leave and I want you to sign those divorce papers.”

She grabbed a cup and launched it at him. “I loved you and I trusted you, and you have done nothing but lie to me. Get the hell out. Get out now!” She threw a fork, followed by a spoon. Next was a magazine, and he had no choice but to start walking back in an attempt to avoid the objects being thrown at him.

There was no stopping her, and when he was finally on the doorstep, he saw her tears once again. It was like a giant fist to the chest, seeing that pain so clear.

“I hate you,” she said. And with that, she slammed the door closed.

Bolt was lost for words. He put his hand on the door and tried to think of the right words, but all he had done was ruin everything.

He didn’t want to leave, and even though there was a door and brick walls between them, he heard the sob. It broke him. He caused this. He made her feel pain.

“Wen, babe, I am so sorry.”

“Leave. Can’t you do something right and actually leave me alone?” She ended the last part on a scream that would stay with him for a lifetime.
