When he returned to the fair, he couldn’t find Morwenna anywhere, which pissed him off. He’d hoped to create some fond memories. They’d gone to so many fairs during their time together. It was where they had a lot of fun, and that didn’t happen.
Which is why he had the roses and was knocking on her parents’ door. This reminded him of the good old days of their dating. This is what their prom was like, only they’d been married by the time prom happened. It was a lot of fun.
He took a deep breath, and the door opened. Whatever smile was on her face vanished.
“Look, I know you’re not my biggest fan right now, but I was hoping we could talk.”
“Talk?” she asked.
“Yeah, clear the air. You keep sending me divorce papers, and I fucked up with everything I did, and it’s going to take a lot for me to make up for it. I brought you some flowers?”
For a second Morwenna didn’t say a word. She looked at the flowers for a long time, and he wondered if there was some foreign object on them, with how enraptured her gaze was. He started to feel a little nervous. Usually, with flowers, Morwenna was happy. Only this time, she just stared at them.
He felt the air go silent.
“Sure,” Morwenna said. “To talk.”
She moved back, and he stepped over the threshold, happy to feel it wasn’t booby-trapped. That was a good sign. If it was left to Gus, he was pretty sure that guy had some kind of weapon that could detect movement, and would have him killed within seconds.
Morwenna closed the door, and he was still breathing. So far, a perfectly respectable feeling. He held out the roses.
Her gaze landed on them, and she took them, and he didn’t get a kiss or a thank you. She held the roses in her hand, and he followed her through to the kitchen. The oven was on, and the scent of baking was heavy in the air. He was pretty sure he detected a hint of cinnamon.
“So, uh, how have you been?”
“I’m good. Just working on a few recipes for the blog, so, what is it you wanted to talk about?” she asked. “What will it take to get you to sign the divorce papers?”
“Wen, look, I don’t want to sign those divorce papers. I love you, and I know I fucked up, but I think we can get past this. It can make us stronger.”
He finished and Wen was just looking at him. At first, he wondered if she was having a blackout episode, he’d seen something like that on a medical drama, but she blinked.
“Make us stronger?” she asked.
“Yes, come on, you know me. You know who I am, and yes, I fucked up with Star.”
“Tell me the truth, how long were you and Star together?” she asked.
He was not expecting her to ask that. Fuck! He didn’t want to lie, but if he didn’t lie, she was going to know he’d been cheating for a lot fucking longer than she caught him.
“Wen, look, do we need to go into details?”
“Is that because you don’t want to tell me you’ve been fucking Star for at least five years, and have not one but three children with her?” she asked, startling him.
“What?”
“Are you going to lie about that too?”
“Who told you?” he asked.
“So, there are other people that know about your kids with Star?”
Shit. Fuck. This was not supposed to be happening. His kids were supposed to remain a secret. Star was with a lot of men, there was no way Wen was meant to know.
“Who knows? The whole club? Your mother? My parents?”
He ran a hand down his face. “The whole club knows. Who told you?”
“Your picture did.”
