Donovan stares at me for a few moments. “Someone’s playing with you.”
“Who?”
“Please, Adam. We both know who.”
“But why is Carter all up in my business lately? I mean, what the actual fuck is he doing?”
Donovan’s eyes go blank for a second. And they stay that way for more seconds than I am comfortable with. “Donovan?”
He blinks and looks at me. “What?”
“OK. Listen.” I sigh and run my fingers through my hair. “I think we’ve all had a long day. I’m ready to turn in. Who is Indie sleeping with tonight? I’ve lost track.”
“Everyone.”
“What?”
“She’s waiting for us on the other side of the house. I saw her take McKay that way.”
I look at the door, not understanding anything in this moment. “The other side of the house?”
“Come on, I’ll show you.”
I follow him into the living room and immediately spy the open door that leads to the side of the mansion we never use.
We’re only halfway down the breezeway leading into the great room when I hear McKay and Indie.
And then there they are. McKay, sitting on the couch with Indie kneeling between his knees. Her head in his lap. Bobbing—
“Fuck,” McKay moans, grabbing her hair with both hands.
“What the hell is going on?”
Indie doesn’t turn. McKay barely opens his eyes. Donovan is already crossing the room, unbuttoning his pants as he walks. He stops and drops them to the floor, then starts fisting his cock as he watches Indie and McKay.
Indie stops and peeks over her shoulder at me. “Don’t forget to close the door on your way in.”
I shut the door without thinking, then cautiously walk towards them.
There are a thousand reasons why we should not do this tonight, and only one why we should.
Any logical person with half a brain could predict what will come of this, even if they didn’t have the history we have between us. Three men—even three men like us, totally devoted to this girl since she was a child—is never gonna work.
And is it ironic or just a bad omen that I’m the only one thinking rationally about it?
Donovan is sitting next to McKay on the couch now, rubbing his leg, leaning in to him. I watch them kiss with a sort of… indescribable detachment. But then Donovan stops and looks at me. The hesitation he was displaying in my office just two minutes ago is gone now. “Come on,” he says. “This is how it’s supposed to be.”
Is it? Is it really?
It’s not jealousy, either. I’m not jealous of either of them being with Indie. I’m not even jealous of Donovan and McKay being together because I know he would pick me over Donovan any day of the week. And I’m not even disagreeing. We knew from day one we’d end up here. It was inevitable.
But it’s just… something feels so wrong about this right now.
The timing?
The room?
The people?
