After reiterating the address to them, I closed my eyes. I was tired. That was another indication that I was getting too old for this. I wasn’t up for the late-night missions anymore. However, tonight was necessary, because Curr had to get what was coming to him.

The feel of the car coming to a stop jolted me awake.

“That door is open,” Kal said, voice heavy with anticipation.

I glanced in the direction of the house, and he was right, the front door was open. When I looked up at the doorway, somebody was walking out. I recognized the face instantly and hopped out of the car.

“What the fuck are you doing here, Kolton?”

“Handling the situation.”

I tilted my head to the side, trying to figure out if I heard him correctly. “He in there?”

“What’s left of him.”

“Kal, check that out.” I glanced over my shoulder briefly before looking back at Kolton. My wife’s fucking brother.

Kal went in and returned seconds later, shaking his head. “Yup, you’re the typa nigga I don’t wanna cross. Forehead holes are messy as fuck.”

I didn’t believe it, so I had to see it for myself. I went in, followed by Kolton. As soon as I entered the room, my eyes locked on the infamous Charles Curr or what was left of him. He had a hole in his forehead and another in the chest.

I just looked at him, wrapped in a silver silk robe, his cigar lit on the table right in front of him.

You would have never been fit to run Watertown. The water would have never respected you.

I’d seen enough, so I turned to leave, sure not to touch anything on the way out. “Who knows you’re here?” I asked Kolton over my shoulder.

“Nobody. I came here to confront him and he said he would rather be dead than Karsyn be married to you. So I made sure his threat was only a threat.”

I didn’t know how to feel about that, so I didn’t speak on it.

“House fire,” I said, looking at Kal.

“Gas leak would be easier. By the time anyone comes out here, it’ll be levelled,” Kal responded, as if he had already been thinking about it.

I nodded. The moment I laid eyes on Charles, a weight lifted for me. The motherfucker who had not only killed my uncle and tried to take my home from me but also tried to kill my wife was no longer on this earth. I hated that he didn’t die by my hands, then again, it probably wasn’t meant.

“Gon’ ahead on.” I looked at Kolton before going back to the house.

He stood there for a moment, then did as I asked, getting into his sports car and speeding off.

“What are you thinking?” Killah’s voice next to me made me turn to look at him. He was rolling up.

“Shit, I think I’ma barbecue this weekend. Put some steaks on the grill and chill for a while.”

Killah nodded, then put the blunt to his lips. “That sounds like a plan. I’ll bring the chicken.”

When Kal was finished, he let us know we had about thirty minutes before everything he’d unplugged and cut on inside the house ignited. We hopped into Killah’s truck and headed back to the city.

“I’ll touch base with the fire investigator in the coming days,” Kal said a few minutes into the drive.

“Why?” I asked from the back seat.

“Pay off, and make it clean. Unless that ain’t what you want.”

“Nope, let it be a mess. Barbeque this weekend, bring the water,” I said with my eyes closed.

Killah laughed. “What type of water are we talking? Real water or the water from the liquor store?”
