“You said you weren’t surprised.”

“I wasn’t. I’ve probably known longer than you.” Teo crossed his arms, but hadn’t moved or turned around.

“Is that, like, a challenge?”

“Maybe.”

“Fine,” I said. “On the count of three, let’s say what grade we were in when I was suddenly gay. One…two…three! Sixth.”

“Fourth.”

“Fourth?!”

“You remember Kevin Williams?” Teo asked.

Oh sweet Jesus.

“I’ll take your silence as a yes. You wouldn’t shut up about his hair. You wanted yours exactly like his. You said it was flowy. And then, when the story came out that Kurt saw up the leg of Kevin’s shorts when he was sitting on a desk and saw it, you pouted for a week that you weren't there.”

I couldn’t help but laugh. “I forgot about that.”

“Well, I never have. I was jealous of Kevin for the longest time. I was your best friend and you spent all your time with me, but you were so focused on this guy that never even said hi to you.”

“I told you he likes you.”

I ignored the voice. I wasn’t going to get my hopes up.

“Is that why you tried so hard in middle school track? You wanted to beat Kevin so I would what? Like you more?” I asked.

“Something like that, I guess. So what do I get for winning? I told you I knew before you and I was right.”

“What? You want a certificate?”

“I was just teasing. I don’t need anything,” Teo replied. “I’m just happy you told me. Thank you for opening up to me. For trusting me. You can always talk to me about anything, this stuff included.”

I didn’t want to ask what he meant by this stuff. I heard his groan and watched in the dark as he reached up to stretch. It was too dark for details but just the outline of his waist, imagining what was there, was enough for me to get hard. I almost felt guilty, but he was naked. Hard not to react to that.

I held my breath as he leaned down to kiss…my forehead. “Our friendship means the world to me. Get some sleep.”

The words were ready to escape. I love you, Mateo Decker. I’ve loved you longer than I can remember.

But my supply of courage had been used up.

He was so cool with me being gay, so comfortable around me, even after he thought I foot-jacked him at the restaurant.

I needed to enjoy this side of Teo for a bit.

“You should’ve told Teo the truth.”

I stopped reading. It was the voice again. The voice I had been hearing for weeks now, though it had been a few days since the last conversation. It was easier to ignore when more was going on, but I was alone, reading for fun in my favorite place. The tower’s windows were all open, letting a nice warm breeze in, likely the last warmth of the fall.

I could just hear the sounds of some sort of athletic competition on the grass below. Glancing down, I saw Aiden, Jayden, Liam, Teo and the other big jocks of the house, standing around in various states of shirtlessness. It looked like touch football.

I watched until I thought Teo saw me, then I relaxed into the pile of pillows I had gathered and went back to my book. I was just getting to the good part – all the tension had built up to their first fuck. Sebastian finally admitted he wanted to try sex with his best friend, Maverick. The names were a bit ridiculous, but I didn’t care. Sebastian was a football jock with a beautiful bubble butt and Mav was finally going to live his deepest fantasy by plowing in between those perfect cheeks.

“Kind of like you and Mateo.”

My hard cock liked the sound of that, but still… “Is this a joke? What is this, Punk’d?” I finally gave in and asked the air? The universe? I flipped over pillow after pillow looking for a microphone, but found nothing. Not that the voice was familiar, but someone had to be fucking with me.
