“Okay, what if he was coerced?” She leaned on his desk, her fingers tapping on the surface.
“I see Adam as a crime-of-passion guy. If it was about money, he would go to mommy and daddy.”
She switched her attention to Tommy. “What would Stephen Gardiner do to bribe Adam into murder?”
“Am, I told you to leave it alone.” His tone mimicked Trey’s own father.
Amy flinched. If he hadn’t been watching, he’d have missed it.
Her hands fisted on her hips. “Too late. Their new delivery guy is in holding now. We caught him red-handed. So, are you going to help me or not?”
Tommy chewed on his lower lip and paced the three feet of the office before he answered. “Am, they will kill you and mom if they find out I talked.”
“That won’t happen. I won’t let them.”
“You can’t stop them.”
“That’s why we need to take them down. They already took a swing at you.”
His eyes grew to the size of saucers. “The car?”
She nodded. “We need to put them away before they hurt anyone else.”
Indecision blanketed his face, but he started talking. “Stephen’s smart. He wouldn’t let a low-level employee know he’s involved. He has the front-end gal take the orders, and then one of the back food-prep guys slips the drugs in.”
“You’re sure?”
“I wasn’t read into it, but once I suspected something was going down, I watched. But I can’t prove any of it.”
Trey sat quietly in his desk chair until now. “You won’t have to. We can use this info to get Adam to help us.”
“Did you give this information to the police when you were arrested?” Amy asked.
Tommy nodded. “For all the good it did.”
Amy’s face fell.
Trey knew there was more to it. “What?”
“The case file I gave you. I know Tommy’s statement word for word. It’s not in there.”
“Someone washed the file.” More proof of corruption. He didn’t realize it went back that far. That opened new search parameters. He made a mental note.
The door flew open. Both Amy and he reached for their guns before he saw it was Brie.
“How could you?” She shot dagger eyes at him. “I told you to leave Adam alone. He saw you at his work the other day. I know you were spying on him.”
“Brie, this isn’t the time.”
She looked around. “Oh, hi.” She smiled at Tommy and Amy.
“It was my fault.” Amy said.
Brie’s expression hardened as she focused on Trey. “I know you’re covering for my big doofus of a brother.”
Amy smirked.
“Hey.” He was many things but a doofus? At least she didn’t know he’d been arrested… yet. He’d need to tell her, but not now.
