Kiera looked sad, and Uncle Liam looked confused. “Why wouldn’t you want to come with us?”
“I promise I am not talking bad about myself.” She knew how much trouble she got in when she did. “But I’m not exactly small. And I don’t mean like Kiera small, I mean small enough to ride. I used to ride when I was skinnier, so I know the 20% rule of horses and the last time I weighed myself…well let’s just say that I would never get on a horse, it would be inhumane.” She sighed, feeling more vulnerable than she ever had in her life.
“Well, that’s just silly talk. These horses are so super strong, they carry my Daddy all the time with no issues.” Kiera giggled.
She snorted. “Maybe so, but I weigh more than you and your Daddy combined, so I still don’t think I should go. But you guys go and have fun.” She tried to smile, to not let the tears that were looming fall, but her smile was sad.
Uncle Liam was kneeling at her feet, gently holding her hands. “I want you to listen to me very carefully, Daphne Erin. You are curvy, yes. But you are not too big to ride a horse. Some horses, maybe, but not Uncle Eamon’s horses. You are not too heavy to sit on my lap; you are not too heavy to go over my knee for a spanking; you are not too heavy, period. You are curvy and beautiful, inside and out. I know other people haven’t been kind to you, but I am telling you the truth.” He captured her head in his hands and brought her forehead to his. “And you definitely do not weigh more than me, I promise.”
“I strongly disagree, but I’m not going to fight you and I sure as shit am not going to weigh myself.” She slapped her hands over her mouth, her eyes growing wide.
He narrowed his eyes. “Do you need to eat soap before we head to Uncle Eamon’s?”
She shook her head so hard she made herself dizzy.
“That was your one freebie. Curse again and you will have a sore bottom and a mouth full of soap. Understood?”
“Yes, Uncle Liam. I’m sorry.” She hung her head, embarrassed she had gotten in trouble yet again.
“It’s ok. You’re not in any trouble. But I told Uncle Eamon that we would come to his estate at 10 a.m. for a ride. We’re going to have a picnic at the top of the ridge. It’s beautiful up there; you will love it, I promise.” He patted her hip, and they all stood up. “Go get dressed in jeans and boots. Kiera, go and get your diaper bag.”
With the orders delivered, the girls scattered to do as they were told. Daphne put on her favorite jeans and her pink books. She loved these boots. Uncle Liam had gotten them custom made to fit her larger calves. She loved how much he took care of her. He always made sure that she had clothes that fit her body, that she loved and was comfortable in. Kiera never made her feel less than because of her body and loved her, no matter what. She was learning to love herself as she was, but it was a process.
They piled in the car and headed down the road. They drove out of the small town, past the ski resort, and turned down a gravel road. It took about twenty minutes to drive the curvy mountain roads but it was a gorgeous drive. The mountains stood tall on both sides and it was as though they were climbing straight up the mountain. The road led them to a guardhouse with armed guards and her eyes grew wide.
“W-where are we? Why do they have guns? Are we safe?” She rattled off questions, a small hand touched her arm, and she jerked towards her, her eyes big as saucers.
“We’re 100% safe, Daphne, I promise. Daddy would never take me somewhere where I wasn’t safe. Uncle Eamon has a lot of security because he’s in the mafia. Well, he’s not in the mafia; he kinda is the mafia.”
“The mafia!” She screamed so loud the guards looked startled.
“Sweetheart, it’s ok. I promise you are safe.” Uncle Liam drove through the gates, her breath getting shallower and shallower. She was clawing at her chest; she couldn’t breathe.
Stopping the car, Uncle Liam got out and came to her door. Pulling it open, he grabbed her and squeezed her tight. The pressure was supposed to calm her down.
“I need you to breathe, Daphne. Right now, young lady.” His harsh words snapped her out of her panic and she sucked in a full breath. “That’s a good girl. Keep breathing for me. Just like that. In and out. You’re ok, you’re safe.” His words of encouragement and physical touch brought her to a place of calm. He continued to hug her tight, encouraging her and speaking soothing words.
Kiera was crying, and Uncle Liam leaned over to grab her hand. “Kiera, babygirl, it’s ok. She’s ok. We’re all ok.”
“I’m not o-ok, Uncle Liam. You have to take me away from here. They can’t find me. They’ll kill me if they do. Please, Uncle Liam, you have to believe me.” Her pleading eyes searched his, and her grip on his shirt tightened. She needed him to understand the urgency of her request. She couldn’t be here or she would die.
Chapter 5
Eamon
He frowned at his phone. A text came through from the guard house telling him that Liam, Kiera, and Daphne were through the gates, but the car was stopped and it looked like he was trying to calm Daphne down. Apparently, there was lots of yelling. Since he was dressed casually, he figured he wouldn’t be too intimidating to the poor girl, so he hopped in his black truck and headed their way. As he approached, Liam held up a hand for him to stop.
“Grab Kiera, please. She is melting down and I need to get Daphne calmed down.”
“Got it, brother.” Liam was one of his best soldiers. He was honest, loyal, and treated women like they were spun gold. He was calm in dangerous situations, but just as lethal as anyone he knew. He was going to promote him to capo soon. He just didn’t know it yet. Going to the other side of the SUV, he pulled a crying Kiera from her seat.
“Shhhh, you’re ok, Kiera. Daphne is going to be ok. Take a breath and tell Uncle Eamon what’s wrong.” He was patting her back, bouncing her as you would a young child.
“It’s all my fault!” she wailed.
“What is all your fault, Little girl?”
“I-I told h-her y-you were m-mafia, and she started screaming that you were g-gonna k-kill her!” Her wails were growing louder and louder.
