“True.” He nodded. “But can you maybe wait until we’ve sorted out this clusterfuck?”
I was curious. They were obviously close. Their mother-son relationship wasn’t one I was used to. “You're not going to get at him about his mouth?”
Her attention returned to me, and she tilted her head to the side, a frown wrinkling her brow. “I probably should, huh? I always fall down on that. But I was fifteen when he was born, and the only males he's been around are my older brother and my dad. They both swear like troopers. Quite honestly, I didn’t see the point. Now, can you have your men put their guns down so I can explain who we are?”
I studied her for a minute but didn’t see any sign of deceit in her eyes. I held up a hand to my men. Lawless heaved a sigh but did as I asked and lowered their guns before he walked over with Lurch to flank me.
“You going to put yours away, gorgeous?”
“Maybe.” She grinned. “But only when you call off the rest of your men to come in from the dark. I don’t need a sniper taking out my boy.”
“We don’t hurt innocents, darlin’,” Lurch told her.
I swallowed the possessive growl that formed in my throat at hearing him call her darlin’. Seriously, what the fuck was wrong with me?
“I believe you,” she said, lowering her arm and holstering her gun. The boy followed her lead. “Not sure what’s got you all twitchy, but from our side, it’s been a day.”
“Before you explain,” I interrupted, “what are your names?”
“Julianna Fraser.” She held out her hand. She smiled as I gripped it, her brown eyes twinkling mischievously, dimples flashing. “But you can call me Juju. This is my son, Finley Fraser.”
“Fin,” he muttered. I assumed he wasn’t keen on using his full name.
“I’m Glacier, President of this club.” I indicated the two men beside me. “This is Lawless, my VP, and Lurcher, my Sergeant-at-Arms.”
“Good to meet you,” she murmured.
“You share the same surname as Gabe and Jack. Are you related?” I asked.
“Yep, my dad and brother. It’s been a day of catastrophes, starting with my sister-in-law going into labour two weeks early.”
Juju went on to explain what had happened and why neither her brother nor her father had been able to make the delivery.
“Why didn’t they call?” I demanded, still deciding if we could trust her story. Although it was so outlandish and would be easy enough to check, I was inclined to believe her.
She frowned and looked at her son. “Good question. Did Uncle Gabe reply?”
Fin pulled his phone from his pocket and scrolled. “Yeah, but only ten minutes ago. Aunt Libby had to be rushed into surgery. He says he can’t get hold of Glacier.”
Juju raised her eyebrows at me. Fuck me, this woman was brazen. I liked it.
Slipping my hand into my cut, I pulled out my phone to check if I’d put it on silent after my call with Lawless. There were half a dozen missed calls and several text messages explaining the mix-up.
Fuck my life. I swiped a hand over my mouth and looked up, my eyes captured by an amused brown gaze.
“All good, big man?”
I nodded.
“Great,” she chirped, clapping her hands. “Let’s get this unloaded so we can get back on the road.”
Lawless and Lurch laughed at her exuberance.
My lips tilted up at the corners until I realised what she’d just said. “You’re not leaving.”
Juju’s steps faltered, and she stiffened. Her back was ramrod straight as she turned around, glaring daggers at me. Lawless inhaled as Fin’s hand hovered over his guns.
I raised my hand, hurrying to explain. “Sorry, that didn’t come out right. I meant, it’s too late to travel back tonight. We’ll unload, and you and Fin can drive the truck to the clubhouse. You can spend the night at my house.”
