As soon we were alone in his office, he closed the door and made his way over to the desk. He didn't say a single word as he sat down, and I knew that he must be angry at me. After a moment, a smile spread across his face as he shook his head at me.
"I don't know what I'm going to do with you," he said as he folded his hands in front of him. "Every time I send someone to collect a debt, you always bring me a person instead of money." With an embarrassed smile, I rubbed the back of my neck.
"Are you mad?" I asked, and he sighed and shook his head at me.
"No," I'm not mad," he reassured me. "However, I do want to know how long you plan on keeping her here. After all, we're starting to run out of space and jobs, and there's practically no one who's leaving soon." I considered this for a moment before smiling back at him.
"What if we started another legit business?" I suggested. "That way, there's more jobs for everyone." Seeming lost for words, he shook his head at me.
"It's not that simple," he told me. "We still have a problem with funding something like that since no one's paying their debts to the group. Unless people start paying back their debt, we're not going to have enough funding for anything." Considering this problem, I shrugged.
"What if we started having people work other jobs outside the group?" I suggested. "They can pay their dues through other means." He stopped as he considered this for a moment.
"That would be a start," he said as he scratched his stubble, "but how are we going to get people to pay their dues if they make their own money?" Realizing the problem with this solution, I shrugged.
"What about a fundraiser?" I suggested. "We could have a motorcycle show and raise money for the group." Chase smiled as he considered this.
"That's better," he agreed before nodding towards the door. "I expect a full proposal at the next group meeting in three days. In the meantime, try to make sure everyone pays their debts and stop bringing people to the compound."
CHAPTER FIVE
Allison
I couldn't believe that I was finally free from Trenton and was being offered a chance to work at the local bookstore. Normally, I would have preferred working at the bakery, but Chase told me that they had more than enough people working there. Instead, I agreed to help out at the bookstore.
Over the next few days, I got to know everyone in the group, including Richard, the man who saved me from Trenton. The compound was full of people like him, but, out of everybody there, he was the one I got along with better than anybody else. He was kind and polite, and I felt like I owed him for saving me from Trenton.
The day things started to fall apart started out like any other day. I was organizing the bookstore, putting out the newest selection of books that had arrived, when I heard the door open. Starting towards the door, I froze when I saw who was there.
"It's about time I found you," Trenton said as he marched towards me. "Where the hell have you been? I paid off that debt days ago." I was about to respond when the front door swung open, and Richard and two other men made their way over to Trenton.
"What the hell are you doing here?" asked the first man as he started at Trenton venomously. "I thought I told you to stay the hell away from here." Before Trenton could say anything, Richard was by my side blocking me from view.
"You promised that, as soon as I paid my debt, you would set her free and send her home," he protested as he stared at the first man in anger. "I paid my debt days ago. Now, let her go." Richard shook his head in response.
"Absolutely not," he argued. "She doesn't want to return to you, so she doesn't have to. Leave her alone." It was at that moment that Chase walked into the bookstore and shook his head at us.
"That's enough," he told us as he turned to look at me. "If anyone should be saying anything regarding this situation, it's Allison." Everyone turned to look at me, and I felt my heart start to sink.
I knew I was here of my own free will, and I knew that everybody expected different things from me. Out of everyone present, only Chase and the other two men seemed to believe that it was completely up to me on whether or not I stayed or left. As strange as it sounded, it felt as though Richard expected me to stay while Trenton expected me to leave with him. Looking around at everyone, I shook my head in response.
"I'm sorry, Trenton," I began as I looked at him. "I'm not going anywhere with you. I want to stay here." Trenton's jaw dropped as he stared at me in shock and disbelief, seeming completely lost for words.
"But I took care of you when no one else would," he reminded me, and I shook my head in response.
"That wasn't taking care of me," I argued. "That was taking advantage of the situation I was in. You never actually cared about me." Much to my surprise, tears started to well up in his eyes.
"I can't believe you," he stated as he stared at me in surprise. "Why would you say that?" I started to open my mouth to answer him when Richard shook his head at Trenton.
"It doesn't matter," he informed him. "She knows that you've been taking advantage of her, and she's not allowing you to do so any longer." Chase gave him a warning look as he continued, completely ignoring everyone around him. "Now get lost lost, and never come back." I was shocked at how cruel he was being to Trenton, but I didn't mind at all. Instead, I watched as Trenton turned to stare him down.
"This doesn't concern you," he snapped, sounding hurt as he spoke. "Stay out of this." Richard laughed as he shook his head at Trenton.
"Absolutely not," he told him. "Leave her alone." Trenton looked like he wanted to fight with Richard, but, when he was reminded of the fact we weren't alone, he backed away.
"Fine," he snapped, anger shining through his voice as he spoke. "Good luck with the little whore." With that, he marched out of the bookstore and disappeared from view.
At first no one said anything, but I could already tell something was wrong. I could feel the tension in the air as they looked around at each other. Finally, after a long silence, Chase turned to look at Richard.
