She scoffed. “Why would you think that?”
Because it totally was. I hadn't had the chance to apologize to her yet, and I wanted her help with something. I should have known better.
The blonde finally reached us and threw her arms around my neck, crushing her body against mine. “Oh, Hunter!”
I patted her back gently before stepping away. “Hey, how are you?”
“So good. I can't believe you're here. It's been so long”
“So long,” I said with fake confidence, hoping she couldn't tell. I was guessing she was someone I knew from high school, but I wasn’t positive.
Presley laughed behind me, but I ignored her. She was evil for leaving me hanging like this.
“How long are you in town for?” the blonde asked.
“Until early tomorrow morning.” I’d never been more relieved for a quick departure.
“Oh, so you're here for the night?” she asked with a gleam in her eyes.
Where were the guys? Where was anyone to help me out of this?
She bit her lip. “I don't live far from here. We should go and catch up.”
She took my hand and started to lead me away while I dragged my heels. Suddenly, an arm wrapped around my shoulders.
“Actually, Sadie, Hunter and I are kind of together,” Presley said with little conviction.
Sadie? That was it! I was pretty sure Jimmy dated her back in high school, so I wasn't sure why she was hitting on me now.
She glanced between me and Presley. “Presley? Presley Stone? Oh my gosh. I can't believe it's really you. I can't believe you came back so soon. That's, like, really brave.”
I looked at Presley. “Why is that brave?”
She shook her head and looked Sadie up and down. “Hunter wanted to come out, and I couldn't say no.”
“Oh, so you two are like together.” Sadie didn’t look convinced.
Presley tightened her hold on me and rested her head against my shoulder, really playing into our fake relationship. “Yeah, we reconnected when I moved to West Penn.”
“Oh, you guys go to the same school now.” Sadie's brows shot up. “That's like crazy.”
Presley nodded. “It's like super crazy, huh?”
I tried not to laugh at the way Presley was mimicking Sadie and put my arm around her waist. “Yeah, it's crazy to think that two people can know each other their entire lives, and it took moving to a different state for us to realize that we belong together.”
“I just didn’t think you’d go for a girl like…her.” Sadie’s smile never faltered as she sized up Presley.
“I know. She’s totally out of my league. She’s beautiful, talented, and heading to the Olympics. I still don’t understand what she’s doing with a slacker like me.” Presley dug her nails into my back, but I couldn’t resist. “I’m lucky she puts up with me.”
Sadie offered a tight smile before turning and strutting away.
Unfortunately, Reid, Ethan, and Benjamin chose that moment to come into the living room. I could see their expressions of confusion, and Benjamin started shaking his head. He specifically told me not to go down this road. I would have to explain later.
But for now, Presley was staying at my side for the rest of this party. I didn't care what anyone else thought. And she didn't seem to either. Sadie finally walked away, and the guys joined us.
“So what's going on here?” Reid gestured between us with a smirk.
“Oh, nothing,” her friend said. “Just declarations of love and whatnot.”
