“You know Jimmy?”
“No. I know Cameron.” She nodded to the girl she was talking to, who smiled at me.
“Jimmy’s my roommate.”
That made sense. Now.
But having Presley here felt … off. Wrong somehow. Even though she probably knew just as many people as I did, if not more.
I looked around the room, panic creeping up as I noticed red cups in everyone's hands.
“Please tell me that's water.”
Cameron chuckled. “Or soda. We heard about the rules, and we made sure no one here drinks. At least not until you guys leave.”
Presley rolled her eyes. “Gee, thanks.”
She might not take it seriously now, but the first time her team got called in about one of them breaking the rules and she experienced that level of fear and stress, she would understand.
“Oh, no,” Presley muttered under her breath as she looked past me.
“What is it?” Cameron asked.
“Mike just saw me.” She ducked her head and shifted slightly so she was almost behind me.
“Who’s Mike?” her friend from the team asked. I couldn't for the life of me remember her name.
I checked over my shoulder and recognized the guy headed toward us. He didn't go to my high school, but he hung out with us sometimes.
“What are you doing here?” His eyes locked on Presley.
“Just hanging out,” she said casually, but she was tense.
“You left this place behind,” he growled. “What gives you the right to be here?”
Presley's eyes met mine before she answered. “I'm just visiting old friends.”
Mike looked over to me, sizing me up. “What are you doing? With her?”
I was surprised he even remembered me. “We go to the same school now.”
“Hunter!” Someone screamed my name.
We all turned and saw a blonde running through the crowd toward us.
I panicked. I recognized her, but I couldn’t remember her name or how I knew her, and I was about to look like a jerk. I widened my eyes, silently begging Presley for help.
She simply smiled. She looked like she was enjoying this. She could tell I was drawing a blank.
I leaned close to her and Cameron. “Do you know who that is?”
Cameron shook her head, and Presley giggled. “Yes, I do.”
“Can you help me?” I whispered as the blonde got within hearing range.
“No, I can't.”
I glared at her. “Is this some sort of payback?”
