He stood and walked to the back of the house, and just moments later, the front door opened with a frazzled-looking Jay searching the front rooms.

“I’m here, Jay.”

His eyes settled on me sitting in his chair and he relaxed just a fraction. “Are you okay?” He crossed the room was kneeling in front of me.

I shrugged. “Some officers are here looking around, and Larson is back with them.”

“You didn’t see or hear anyone?”

I shook my head.

He nodded and looked around. “It could have been a glitch.”

I waited until his eyes met mine. “How often has that happened?”

His jaw clenched. “It hasn’t, but that doesn’t mean it can’t.”

“Jay.”

I hated that I could hear the fear in my voice. I was the calm one. Rational. Poised. I’d handled tough things before and I never let it get to me, but this was it. I’d found my breaking point.

He leaned forward and wrapped his arms around me. “It’s okay, Mac. I’m not going to let anything happen to you.”

I wanted to let myself believe that, but he couldn’t be with me every second of every day. The attacker had already proven that several times. This needed to end. Now.
