“And you’re here alone?”

“Yes, he had to run an errand and I had homework, so he dropped me off.”

“And you know the alarm code?”

I nodded. “Yes, I live here right now.”

“Did you notice anything unusual when you got here?”

“I went straight to the living room to start working, but nothing I saw looked out of place.”

I looked past King to where Officer Nunez had made himself at home, walking through the living room before disappearing into the kitchen.

A knock on the door was the perfect distraction to how irritated I was getting. I walked to the door and swung it open.

Detective Larson gave me a short nod as I invited him in.

He looked like he was about to say something when he noticed the other officer in the room.

“King, have you checked the house for intruders or what could have triggered the alarm?”

The officer looked between me and Larson with mild confusion. “No, I was asking Mckayla a few questions.”

Larson looked as annoyed as I felt with the situation. “I can continue with the questions while you take a look around.”

King looked reluctant to leave, but Larson led me in the opposite direction toward the living room.

“You were alone when it went off?”

I nodded. “Jay had some errands to run, so I stayed here to do homework.”

“And you set the alarm when you got here?” He was focused on his notepad. He wasn’t writing anything, though.

Maybe he had notes from the last time I called him.

“Do you have any suspects yet?”

Larson shook his head and finally looked up. “The best lead we have is that it’s likely someone from your newspaper team since they’re the only ones that knew about you running the blog.”

“But that’s about twenty guys.”

Our newspaper staff was large, although there were only about a dozen of us that were full-time. The rest of them were interested in journalism and wanted to get a taste of what it was like, or needed the credit.

“What if someone from the paper told their friends? We can’t just assume it’s someone from the staff.”

I sounded desperate to my own ears. My mind knew what Larson would say, but my heart couldn’t accept the person behind the attacks, my attack, and breaking into my home could possibly be one of my friends.

He nodded slowly. “That’s a possibility, but we have to start somewhere.”

“Are you going to start interviewing them?”

If he had plans, he had to have gone through Jay to set them up, right? Jay hadn’t mentioned anything, but maybe he didn’t want me to worry about it.

“This week. I’ve been waiting for some other things to get approved, but we’ll start calling people in soon.”

“What do I do now?” I bit my lip while I waited. I hated not being the one in control, not being the one to make the plan. This was out of my league. I’d learned my lesson with this case. I tried to take things into my own hands and I ended up homeless and spending more time with a detective than Aubrey.

“You stay safe and stay smart. I’ll see if the others found anything.”
