“A solitary princess cut.”

Katie nodded and led us a few cases down to a display of the most exquisite rings I’d ever seen.

“Do any of these catch your eye?”

“All of them.”

She laughed, before I realized I’d said that aloud.

I scanned the selection with Aubrey in mind. She was classic, nothing too trendy. She wouldn’t want anything too flashy either.

I pointed to a princess cut with a solid silver band. It screamed Aubrey.

Kate removed it from the display and offered it to me. She rattled off the details about the diamond, cut, clarity, and carats, but I could only focus on the gorgeous ring.

I slid it onto my ring finger and gasped.

It was perfection.

It fit like a glove. Like it was meant just for me. I held my hand up and admired the sparkle under the strategic lighting.

Magnificent.

“Do you like it?”

Kate was watching me with a knowing smile.

“It’s everything.”

Carter finally seemed to join our world. “You think that’s the one?”

“Oh yes.”

“Do you have a date selected?”

We both looked to Kate, confused. Carter caught on before I did.

“Oh no. We’re not together!”

A look of irritation crossed her face. Oh no. She thought we were just messing around.

“I’m the best friend of the bride-to-be. I’m helping him pick it out.”

Her smile returned in a flash. “Very smart.” She nodded in Carter’s direction.

She looked back to me. “We have a similar ring I think you should look at.”

She slid a black mat toward us and selected another ring from the display. Sliding off the current ring I offered it back to her and accepted the new one.

Oh good grief.

I slid it onto my finger and tears filled my eyes. “Carter. This is it.”

He looked to the ring then back to me. “Are you crying?”

I blinked away the tears and shook my head. “Of course not.”

His eyes narrowed. “You were about to.”
