His friend was already walking away so he hurried to catch up to him.
I let out a breath and spun to face Sophia.
“I can’t believe I just did that.”
She licked her spoon. “That was crazy, dude.”
She watched me in silence before looping her arm through mine and turning us in the direction the guys had gone.
“Come on, let’s go find a bench, and we can see if he even put his number in.”
That thought hadn’t even crossed my mind, but I suddenly felt deflated. He probably just tapped the screen and handed it back. Why would he give me, a crazy person, his number?
I replayed the entire encounter in my head until I was sitting down. I looked around and realized we were in a park surrounded by people, dogs, and…“Oh, the arch!”
Sophia laughed at me. “Yes, welcome to Washington Square.”
I took a bite of my cookie dough while trying to ignore the weight of her eyes on me. Of course, she wanted an explanation for my behavior. Anyone would. I basically attacked Liam. A stranger. People don’t just do that. At least, I didn’t. I took another bite and decided to play with her and see how long she would last before she snapped at me.
I got two more bites down before it happened.
“So? Explain!”
I smirked and stuck my spoon in the dough. “I asked Liam to show us around.”
“Yes, but why?”
“Because he and his friend were cute.”
I knew I was driving her crazy, but I didn’t know how much I could tell her. Her reaction would dictate the rest of my week. She could run away screaming that I was an insane person, then I would be stranded and have to hang out with Greg for the next four days. No, thank you.
“There are plenty of cute guys in the city. Are you going to chase after all of them?”
“No.” I was leaning toward her already thinking I was crazy.
“Then why him?”
Why him, indeed?
My fingers lifted and clutched the pendant. I took a deep breath and opened my hand.
“Have you noticed this?”
Her eyes dropped for a moment before looking back at me and nodding. “Yeah.”
“What color was it this morning?”
Her eyes narrowed. “I think it was clear?”
“Yeah.”
“So? It’s a mood…necklace?”
I shook my head.
“Sorry, but I really don’t get what this has to do with you asking Liam to hang out with us.”
Here it goes. “Well, this necklace is special. It’s a few centuries old.”
