She fake pouted like she was genuinely concerned about my current state.
Katie turned to me. “I know a few of the guys want to ask you. Do you want me to talk to them?”
I would have laughed if her concern wasn’t so genuine.
Just when I was going to tell her not to worry about it, Evan walked by. He was another friend of Kevin’s and one of the few guys I liked from the team.
“Excuse me.” I smiled sweetly at Gwen and turned away to walk to Evan’s locker.
He saw me walk up and smiled. “Hey April.”
“Hi.” I paused feeling the eyes of the girls on me.
He looked over my shoulder then met my eyes. “We have an audience.”
“I figured.” I let out a sigh. “Gwen is being herself…” He laughed, understanding exactly what I meant. “Mitchell and Kyle asked Gwen and Harley to homecoming so they were making plans to all go together until Gwen graciously pointed out that I don’t have a date.”
Evan’s eyebrows rose. “You don’t? I heard like three different guys from the team were going to ask you.”
“Nothing yet.” I lifted a shoulder.
“Awesome.” His grin lit up his face, “Will you go with me then? I wanted to ask you, but I figured you were already taken.”
I hoped this would happen, but his invitation was genuinely sweet. “Of course. Thank you.”
“Don’t worry.” He lowered his voice and leaned toward me. “I’ll be the buffer between you and the girls.”
I chuckled. “Thanks. I’m sure the group will figure out the details, but I’ll make sure to tell you what I find out.”
He nodded. “Sounds good. I’ll figure things out with Kevin. Just let me know what color your dress is.”
I gave him a quick hug. “You’re the best.”
“I know.” He winked before stepping backward, “See you.”
I waved and joined the girls again. “I’m going with Evan.”
Gwen’s jaw twitched. “That was nice of him to take pity on you.”
I shrugged. “He said there were a few guys on the team that wanted to ask me, but when I told them no one had asked me he jumped on the chance.”
“Perfect.” She said it so tightly I thought her jaw was going to break.
“It is, isn’t it?” I kept my smile firmly in place.
“Yay!” Katie did a little happy dance with her shoulders and hips, “Kevin and I will figure out the details and let everyone know.”
Gwen and Harley sneered before finally walking away.
“We’ll have to go dress shopping this weekend.” Katie started in the direction of our next class.
“I’ll be off work at eleven on Saturday, so I can pick you up and we can go to the mall.” I’d have to remember to bring heels and a good bra with me to work.
“Sounds good.”
I was about to turn the corner to head to my next class when Katie stopped me.
“Do you think the routine is ready? I know we have next week to practice, but—”
