The deal is that you immerse yourselves in the course. I ask you to take an industry guest for lunch and you act as if I’m being unreasonable. He’s a commercial gallery owner who talks to all our students, and we need to make him feel welcome.

Jonathan

He’s a dinosaur! A crashing bore! A lunch with him is the last thing we need right now. You don’t know everything we’re doing. It’s bad enough dealing with Patrick, Jem and Cameron and the whole coursework thing. I’m sorry we overreacted, but pretending you’re something you’re not is damned hard.

Gela

I didn’t suggest this. You did.

Jonathan

But you agreed. At least now we’ve cleared the air. You’ve had your say. I’ll make every effort to be present for the course and will make sure industry guests are looked after in future. Ludya will do her best, her family situation permitting. But Suzie has the expertise for this project and she MUST concentrate on it.

Gela

What *is* your project?

Gela

Only I read in the Guardian that your mysterious new leader is committed to direct action.

Jonathan

I’m afraid that’s classified.

RH WhatsApp group members Ludya Parak, Suzie Danners, Jonathan Danners and Gela Nathaniel, 14 November 2023:

Suzie

Forgot to take my folder home, thought it would be safe under the desk, got in this morning and MY FILES HAVE GONE.

Jonathan

What exactly was in it?

Suzie

The codes and binary variations we’ll need at Thorney Coffin.

Ludya

We can’t access them again. Seriously, this is it.

Suzie

Posted on Doodle. GELA, I NEED THAT FUCKING PORTFOLIO BACK.

Jonathan

Calm down, everyone. Whoever’s got it won’t know what the codes are for. You can say the printouts are for an art project. You’ll think of something. But we need it back.

WhatsApp chat between Gela Nathaniel and Cameron Wesley, 14 November 2023:

Gela

I’ve got Suzie Danners’ portfolio of ‘codes and binary variations’. She left them behind on Friday and I spotted them this morning. Useful to you?
