I could feel her hovering on the other side before footsteps drifted away.

“I don’t think she likes me,” Justin’s lips pressed against my ear, his voice playful. It made my chest ache. It made everything ache.

“It’s because you’re wearing an outfit that costs more than their mortgage and your Mercedes is parked out front.”

His chuckle vibrated against my chest. “So you’re saying if I want to visit you again, I should wear jeans and a t-shirt?”

I scoffed. I couldn’t help it. “I’m pretty sure your designer jeans and t-shirt would still make you stand out.”

“How do you know I wear designer jeans?”

I picked my head up from where it’d gone back to resting on his chest. He had a really comfortable chest. “Are you telling me that you don’t?”

His lips twitched. “Define designer.”

I rolled my eyes. “You’re hopeless.”

His arms tightened around me, the possessive squeeze he gave me causing my throat to close up with too many emotions I didn’t want to face.

This afternoon was a one off. Tomorrow I would go back to reality. For today I would bask in this moment because I felt lighter than I ever had my entire life.

“Would you care to watch something?”

He’d already pulled up a streaming service and Dr. Who.

I smiled into his shirt and took a deep breath of his distinct scent. “I have all the episodes downloaded on my computer you know.”

“Legally?”

“Um…”

He toyed with a loose strand of my hair, rubbing it between his thumb and forefinger. “You’re hopeless,” he whispered and pressed a kiss to my forehead.

Chapter 14

The following week I couldn’t look Midge in the eye. Every time I did, I felt like she could see everything I was hiding. Falling asleep in Justin’s arms when he’d taken care of me. My tumultuous emotions. The fact that he’d brought me to orgasm so hard right here in the clinic I couldn’t look at my desk or patient room 3 without getting turned on.

It didn’t help that she kept stealing glances at me, inquiring about my health, wondering if I’d seen Justin the day I’d called out sick because apparently, he’d left early for ‘personal’ reasons.

Odd, was all I’d said.

Her questions felt like traps. I had no idea what Justin shared with her when they were in the back rooms working with patients. For all I knew, he had told Midge he was going to bring me soup, in which case my behavior probably looked suspicious as fuck.

I was probably making a bigger deal out of this than I needed to. I had no idea where I stood with Justin. He’d watched me touch myself, fingered me, then held me, and now we were back to working colleagues. For all I knew, I was nothing but a fleeting fling. It hurt to think that, but I needed to get my head—and heart, wrapped around that possibility real fast.

The only distraction I had was my coding. Justin’s medical charting program was all but finished and I’d shared it with my professor, who’d finally got back to me that morning.

“Tell me, Katie,” Midge interrupted my email while we were alone at the reception desk. “Do you like older men?”

My hand slipped on the keyboard and I deleted a whole row from my response to my professor.

Shit. “Why do you ask?”

She pretended to straighten a pile of papers. “Well, I couldn’t help but notice the way you look at your stepfather.”

The muscles in my hands froze.

“I couldn’t help but notice the way he looks at you too when he thinks no one is watching.”
