I turn to Joe. “And Jenn?”

“Water broke.”

“Of course it did.”

“On Bennet.”

I pause. Despite everything currently happening, that information makes it through.

“Jenn’s water broke on Bennet?”

Joe and Bennet both nod, then point down at Bennet’s shoes.

“He went over to check on her because she called Blaire to tell her the contractions were getting stronger,” Joe explains. “Then Blaire had another one while they were on the phone, everybody started yelling, and somewhere in the middle of all that, Jenn’s water broke on Bennet’s shoes.”

Rose absolutely loses it behind me.

I drag a hand down my face. “Fucking hell.”

“Yeah,” Joe says. “So, we have to go.”

“Why are you here?”

Both of them look at me like I’ve just asked why humans require oxygen.

Bennet answers first. “Because our babies are coming.”

“I understand that part, idiot. Why the fuck did you leave your wives and come over here instead of texting or calling?”

They just exchange a confused glance.

“You two are panicking.”

“No,” Bennet says immediately.

“Yes,” Joe says at the exact same time.

Bennet turns on him. “Dude.”

“What? We are.”

“You don’t tell him that.”

“He has eyes.”

I do, and they are currently looking at two grown men who appear to have collectively misplaced every survival skill they’ve acquired since birth. One has amniotic fluid on his shoes. The other looks like he styled his hair with an electrical outlet. Neither one should be operating heavy machinery.

I step aside and point into the apartment. “Give us two minutes to get dressed.”

“Two minutes?” Joe asks.

“Unless you want Rose going to the hospital in my fucking T-shirt.”

Both men immediately find fascinating things to look at that are nowhere behind me.

“Two minutes is good,” Bennet says.

“Perfect,” Joe agrees.
