I kiss Rose quickly and climb out of bed, grabbing my boxers off the floor and dragging them on before finding a T-shirt somewhere near the bedroom door. The pounding starts again before I even have my head through it.
“I’m coming!”
“Faster!”
“Keep hitting my fucking door and see how fast I move.”
I'm still pulling my shirt down when I yank the door open and find Joe and Bennet standing on the other side.
Both of them look completely fucking deranged.
Joe's hair is a mess, Bennet has somehow managed to put his shirt on inside out, and they're both breathing hard enough that you'd think they ran here instead of crossing the hall. For one bizarre second, neither of them says anything. They just stare at me.
I look from one to the other. “What the fuck happened?”
“Jenn is in labor!”
“Blaire is in labor!”
They say it at exactly the same time.
My brain picks up both sentences, examines them individually, and then promptly refuses to process them together.
“What?”
“Jenn is in labor,” Joe repeats, gesturing toward his apartment like maybe I've forgotten which pregnant woman belongs to him.
“Ambulances are on the way,” Bennet adds quickly. “Blaire is in labor too.”
I look at Bennet. “Blaire?”
“Yes.”
Then at Joe. “Jenn?”
“Yes!”
I look between them again.
“At the same fucking time?”
“YES!” they both yell.
I hang my head.
Why is this my life?
Rose appears behind me, wrapped in my shirt, and I hear her gasp.
“Oh my God.”
“Exactly,” Bennet says, pointing at her like she’s the first person all night to properly understand the severity of the situation.
I’m still trying to catch up. “Wait. Blaire was fine when we left.”
“She was not fine,” Bennet says. “Apparently Stabby Wabby was having contractions through half the fucking pizza contest and didn’t think they were worth mentioning.”
From behind me, Rose makes a sound suspiciously close to a laugh.
