“Not a day passes that I don’t. He’s in his eighties, and he’s active, but you know… Do you worry about losing your grandmother?”
She was quiet for a beat. “All the time.”
“Well, if that happens, you won’t have to go through it alone.” He kissed her temple.
“Thanks. Neither will you.” She rested her head against his chest.
They sat in comfortable silence, serenaded by the sounds of the crickets and the water, and Flynn was enveloped by a sense of contentedness. He rested his chin on her shoulder and whispered, “You know, Steele, you’re not so bad after all.”
“I’m glad you think so, because I’m pretty sure I’d like to keep you around for a while.”
Chapter Twenty-Four
SUTTON PACED HER office, reading the script for the voice-over she was scheduled to narrate later that afternoon. Imagine the rainforest drying up because it’s unable to generate its own rainfall to sustain its ecosystem. We’re nearing that tipping point, and this is why—
“Knock, knock?”
Her pulse quickened at the sound of Flynn’s voice. She looked up from the script and found him standing in the doorway with Ray, the audio technician. She heard other people in the hallway and tried not to let the emotions coursing through her show, but it was like trying to hold back a tsunami. It had been a week and a half since she’d met Flynn’s siblings and had spent her first weekend at his place. They were playing platonic colleagues at work while sneaking steamy kisses and satiating their desires behind closed office doors every chance they got. The first couple of times they’d hooked up at work, she was shocked she’d done it. But that shock had faded fast. The risk of being caught was an unexpected aphrodisiac, heightening every sensation. She’d begun craving their office hookups, and they’d since perfected the act of quickies. Most evenings found them hiding out at Flynn’s cabin, having dinner by the water, taking walks, watching movies, reading, or just being together, all of which Sutton loved, and their nights were spent in each other’s arms, burning up the sheets or talking until the wee hours.
“Are we interrupting?” Flynn asked.
“No. I was just going over the script. What’s up?”
“Ray has a schedule conflict this afternoon,” Flynn said.
“Sorry, Sutton, but I just got a call about a conference at my kid’s school.” Ray was a single father of a teenage son who was always getting into trouble. “Is there any chance you can do it earlier?”
“Sure. I’ve got a call at three, but I can do it anytime between now and then.”
“How about in twenty minutes?” Flynn suggested. “I want to go over a few tweaks with Sutton first.”
“Sounds good to me,” she said.
“Great. Thanks, guys. I appreciate it,” Ray said. “I’ll go get ready.”
As he walked away, Flynn stalked into her office with a wolfish grin that made her stomach flip-flop. He pointed to the script as people walked by her office, brows knitted as if he were giving her directions, but his low voice was pure lust. “I can’t stop thinking about breakfast this morning.”
Her body flamed with memories of him down on his knees in the kitchen as he’d made her come and of riding him on a kitchen chair where he’d given her two more toe-curling orgasms. Good Lord, she could still feel him inside her, still feel the sting on her scalp as he’d tugged her hair, demanding her mouth, and kissed her senseless. She felt herself go damp.
“Tweaks? Really?” Driving each other crazy in the office had become a dangerous and addictive game. She loved the way they toyed with each other at work, but cooling off after they turned up the heat was never easy. “I have to perform in twenty minutes.”
“I have no doubt you’ll give a peak performance. You always do.” The corners of his mouth tipped up. “I just like knowing you’re thinking of me.”
She had visions of closing her office door and seeing if it was as much fun to ride him on her office chair as it was in the kitchen. But while they’d fooled around behind closed doors when they could steal a few minutes, it seemed like everyone was in the office today. As much as she wanted him, she wasn’t about to risk it, and she knew just how to get back at him for revving her up. “I’ll keep that in mind,” she said loud enough for anyone in the hallway to hear, then turned her back to the door and lowered her voice. “The question is, what should I do about my wet panties?”
The muscles in his jaw clenched.
“I guess I’ll just have to slip them off. I might even have to take things into my own hands to ease the tension before narrating.”
“Sutton,” he said gruffly.
“Is it hard thinking about my fingers doing the walking?” She whispered, “I’m wet just thinking about you imagining me doing it.”
“You’re playing with fire.”
Having fun, she arched a brow. “Burn, baby, burn.”
“Skip yoga tonight, and come to my place.” Since she lived in the same complex as Dawn and Andi, they’d decided staying at her place was too risky.
