“I can’t believe you answered the phone if you were in bed with Sutton,” Victory said.
“I figured it was important or you wouldn’t have called so early.”
“You are a supremely thoughtful brother, but please feel free to ignore my call next time.”
“How about you just wait for a decent hour to call unless it’s an emergency?”
“Fine,” Victory relented. “Tell Sutton I said hi, and go have fun. I’m happy for you!”
“Vic, please don’t mention this to anyone. We have a lot to figure out because of work.”
“I never would. Wait. Does Leni know?”
“Jesus.” He moved the mouthpiece away, turning to Sutton, who was rifling through his cabinets, no doubt in search of caffeine. He loved seeing her there, comfortable enough to make herself at home. “Sut, does Leni know about us?”
She turned with a guilty expression. “She knows about the rainforest, but not about last night.”
“You guys hooked up in the rainforest?” Victory asked excitedly. “No wonder you looked like you wanted to rip her clothes off.”
Shit. “Goodbye, Vic.” He ended the call, mulling over his damn transparency. He watched Sutton peer into his refrigerator and felt himself smiling. He definitely needed to learn to mask that. “If you’re looking for hazelnut creamer, sorry, but you won’t find any. I had no idea I’d see you last night, much less that you’d end up in my bed.”
She closed the fridge. “That’s okay. I have some in my purse.”
He’d have found that annoying when they’d first met, but now he thought it was cute.
“Sorry about before. I didn’t realize you were on the phone.”
“That’s okay.” He set his phone on the coffee table and headed into the kitchen. “Vic noticed the way I was looking at you last night. She was calling to say she liked the idea of you and me getting together.”
“Really? I like her a lot, and I like your brothers, too. You guys give each other crap the same way my family does, but…” Her brows knitted. “Is this too risky? Are we making a mistake? I mean, if Victory noticed, who else will?”
That’s the million-dollar question. “No, we are not making a mistake.”
“Then why do you look like you’re planning a war?”
He softened his tone. “I don’t.”
“You kind of do,” she said sweetly.
“I’m just trying to figure things out, that’s all. Vic’s call was a good reminder that we have to be careful.” He was hit with a horrible thought. “Why? Do you feel like this is a mistake?”
“No,” she said quickly, bringing relief. “But this thing between us is new, and who knows where it will lead. I don’t want you to get in trouble, and everyone knows the boss always gets blamed for this type of relationship, even if I kissed you first.”
He had been hiding, keeping himself out of the spotlight, since he won that reality show, and he realized with a start that with Sutton he didn’t want to hide. But what he wanted and what needed to happen were two very different things.
“I’m well aware of that, but I’m not giving you up.” He kissed her softly. “We’ll just play it safe and keep our relationship off everyone’s radar until we figure things out.”
A coy smile reached her eyes. “Does this mean we get to be each other’s dirty little secret?”
“You like that idea, don’t you?” He gathered her in his arms.
“It might be fun.”
“I have a feeling anything with you would be fun, but I need to learn how to look at you like I don’t want you. Think you can ugly yourself up and start bitching at me?”
She laughed softly. “Well, I am wearing orange, which I believe we both agreed wasn’t my best color.”
“We were wrong about that. But as gorgeous as you are in my shirt, I think it’ll look better on the floor.” He stripped it off her, and holy hell. She had no panties on. “Well, well, look at this beautiful gift I’ve been given.” He backed her up against the fridge, earning a sexy smile as he lifted her arms over her head and wrapped one of his hands around both of her wrists.
