Leni planted a hand on her hip. “Then why would you stagnate your career? It’s not like you’re going to become a world-renowned journalist working at Discovery Hour. It’s a great place, but it’s not GNN.”
“I know it’s not, but Flynn’s giving me a chance to report on more important stories, so who knows what the future holds?”
“I think that’s the point Leni is making,” Victory said. “You don’t know what the future holds on either side. You’ve worked hard to get where you are, and Leni doesn’t want you to throw it away for any man.”
“Exactly,” Leni said.
“On the other hand, Leni,” Victory said firmly, “Flynn sees her potential, and it sounds like he’s trying to nourish that.”
“Yes, but he can’t take her as far as GNN can,” Leni pointed out.
“That’s true,” Victory said. “But as a businesswoman and someone who is madly in love with her fiancé, surely you can see where she’s coming from.”
“Of course I can, but Raz’s schedule takes him away for long stretches, and we make it work without either of us giving up what we want.”
“I didn’t say I was giving it up,” Sutton said. “I said I wasn’t sure what I wanted.”
“Does that mean you’ll blow the interview on purpose?” Leni asked.
“No. I’m just confused.”
“Maybe you should talk to Flynn about that,” Victory suggested.
“I can’t. That would put him in a terrible position. It’s my decision to make, and I will. I just needed to get that off my chest. Part of me wishes he’d ask me not to go.”
“Trust me, you do not want that,” Leni said. “You’d eventually resent him for holding you back.”
“I know I would.” Sutton looked up at the ceiling, trying to hold back tears of frustration. “But that doesn’t mean my heart doesn’t want it.”
Victory put a hand on her shoulder. “Here’s the thing, Sutton. You should be confused right now. Any smart woman would be. But your head and heart aren’t separate. They both got you where you are in your career, and nobody else can tell you what’s right or wrong for you. Leni has a valid point about not making a decision based on a guy.”
“Would you have left your job working with Harvey?”
A shadow washed over Victory’s eyes, but it was gone as quickly as it had appeared. “What I would or wouldn’t do doesn’t matter. Everyone’s situation is different. I feel for you, and I believe that true love can endure anything. I think you should go to the interview and give it your all. See if you like the management team, weigh the opportunity. You might come out of there with stars in your eyes and be thankful you did your best. You can still turn it down if you don’t want to go. Either way, you can’t clear the confusion you feel without taking that first step.”
Sutton swallowed hard and nodded. “You’re right. Thank you. I needed to be talked off the ledge.”
“Hello,” Leni snapped. “We both said the same thing. Why will you listen to her and not me?”
“Because it’s hard to think when I’m being bowled over. You’re like a bullying wave, and Victory is a gentle wind.”
“That’s because you’re not doing business with her,” Leni said.
Victory batted her lashes at Leni. “Cutthroat in business, comforting in life. Harvey lived by that statement.”
Sutton’s chest tightened. “I’m really sorry you lost him.”
“Me too.”
“Me three,” Leni chimed in. “But it’s almost time for Sutton’s interview. Are you going to buy that suit and wear it out?”
“If I want to nail this interview so I have a decision to make, according to the advice of my incredibly wise and pushy sister and my new rational friend, yes, I am. Let’s do this.”
IN THE CAB on the way to the interview, Sutton’s phone vibrated with a text.
Flynn: Good luck, Steele. You’ll blow them away.
Sutton: Thanks! I hope so.
