“Well, I wasn’t until I saw them together last night,” Leni said as she poured coffee into a mug. “And yeah. Now I am. He’s really into her, and I haven’t seen her this happy in years. He must be rocking her world in more ways than one.”
“Seriously, Archer, don’t you think you’re overreacting?” Steve asked. “Everyone is allowed to have some fun, and love comes in all forms.”
“All of y’all have lost your fucking minds.” He grabbed Flynn by the collar, hauling him toward the kitchen door. “You go near my grandmother again and I’ll fucking—”
“Grandmother?” Leni asked, wide-eyed.
“Hey! Get off him!” Sutton ran into the kitchen and tried to pry Archer’s hand off Flynn’s shirt.
“You too, Sutton? What the hell? He’s sleeping with Grandma!”
Flynn shrugged, trying not to laugh. “What can I say? Lenore’s hot.”
“That’s it, motherfucker.” Archer cocked his arm as Indi came into the kitchen. Sutton yelled, “Stop!” Indi screamed, “Archer, don’t!” and Steve caught Archer’s fist before he could throw the punch, gloating, “Gotcha, son.”
Archer’s furious eyes moved over them.
“Sorry, dude. I was just a pawn. I’m Flynn. I’m here with Sutton.”
Archer’s expression went from rage to confusion to fury, and he wrenched his arm free from Steve’s grip. “Her boss? You’re the asshole who’s been trying to get her fired?”
“Archer, don’t be a dick,” Sutton seethed.
“It’s okay, Sutton. I was that asshole when you first started working with me.” Flynn put his arm around her and met Archer’s ice-cold gaze. “Then I realized the error of my ways. Now I’m the guy who’s falling head over heels for your sister. But based on the stories I heard last night, it sounds like you were the same with Indi, and look at you now.”
“He’s right,” Indi said, sliding between Archer and Flynn and wrapping her arms around Archer.
“Yeah, whatever, man,” Archer grumbled. “Just watch yourself.”
“Hey, Flynn,” Leni said, drawing everyone’s attention to her as she snagged a muffin. “I bet you’re having second thoughts about coming to the island now, aren’t you?”
He gazed into Sutton’s beautiful eyes and knew he’d do whatever it took to make her his. “Not even a little.”
AFTER A DELICIOUS, banter-filled breakfast, Flynn and Sutton headed to Main Street to get him clothes for the wedding. Sutton was glad she’d never brought a guy home to meet her family before. Somehow it made walking around her hometown hand in hand with Flynn even more special. Not that she’d brought him to the island, but she was glad he’d come. She still couldn’t believe he’d come all that way to make things right and hadn’t hesitated to fight for her in front of everyone last night. If that didn’t tell her how real his feelings were, nothing could.
“This is a cute town. The shops remind me of Ridgeport,” he said as they walked from the car toward the men’s clothing store. “I’d like to take you there one day and introduce you to my parents.”
Her heart soared, but she couldn’t help teasing him. “I don’t know, Braden. That’s a big step.”
“Almost as big as playing the part of Grandma’s boyfriend.”
They both laughed.
“When I saw Archer going after you, I thought you’d run for the hills,” Sutton said carefully.
“It would take a lot more than your hotheaded brother to scare me off.” He leaned in and kissed her, and she filled with happiness. “What do you say, Steele? Want to meet my parents and see all my old haunts?”
“I would love to.”
“Great. They’ll be back in a few weeks. We’ll talk to them and plan something. In the meantime, show me all your old hangouts and where your milestones happened.”
“You’re looking at one right now. After I graduated from my cardboard-box newscasting, I would go with my mom when she ran errands and interview the shop owners to practice reporting.”
“See? Always going the extra mile to get things right. That’s adorable.”
“I’m sure it was annoying to the people I interviewed, but they never let on. They went along with it, answering my questions and telling customers they’d be with them in a minute, as if I were someone important and not just a kid.”
“You were a kid on a mission. That’s impressive, not annoying. I can’t wait to talk to some of them.”
