“Because you’re not allowed to make any more assumptions where we’re concerned. Facts first. Pros and cons lists only.”
She nodded, fresh tears spilling down her cheeks. “Okay.”
He drew her into his arms, whispering for her ears only, “I’m so sorry, sweetheart,” and then he kissed her, feeling all their broken pieces coming back together.
“Yay!” Jules cheered. “Love wins.”
They broke the kiss on a laugh, and as he gazed into Sutton’s eyes, he knew Jules was right, because those three special words vied for release.
“Thank goodness. I was holding my breath,” her mother said.
“Me too,” Daphne said.
“I’m just over here tearing up,” Tara said, wiping her tears.
“Grandpa would like this young man,” her grandmother said.
That got Sutton’s attention. “He would?”
“Yes indeed. He respected men who didn’t waste time or mince words,” her grandmother said.
“Hear that, sweetheart? Since I have your granddad’s approval, will you please do me the honor of wearing your bracelet?”
“What do you think?” She held out her wrist, grinning from ear to ear as he put it on her.
He laced their fingers together and kissed the back of her hand.
“Do we like the meanie now?” Hadley asked.
“Yes,” Joey answered. “I guess Aunt Sutton doesn’t need to bag her boss after all.”
He and Sutton exchanged a heated glance, and she said, “Well, I wouldn’t go that far.”
Everyone laughed, and Flynn drew her into another kiss.
“Okay, Romeo. Keep it in your pants,” Leni teased.
“I’ll get out of your hair.” He looked at the women who he had a feeling would do anything for Sutton and said, “Thanks for letting me intrude. I’ve heard a lot about each of you, and I hope at some point we’ll have a chance to get to know each other better.”
“You’re not staying?” Sutton asked.
“I don’t want to intrude on your family time.”
“You’re not.” Sutton held his hand tighter and glanced at Indi. “Do you mind if he comes to the wedding?”
“Of course not,” Indi said.
“That’s really nice of you, but I didn’t bring clothes for a wedding.”
“That’s okay,” Jules said. “There are clothing shops in town. You can pick something up before the ceremony.”
“It’s an afternoon wedding, and not too fancy.” Sutton looked at him hopefully. “Unless you don’t want to stay?”
He tapped his jaw, as if contemplating it. “Let’s see. Go home to an empty house and think about you all weekend, or attend the wedding of two of your favorite people with you? That’s a tough choice.”
She laughed softly. “Is that a yes?”
“That’s a yes. Just tell me where to book a room.”
