I shoved to my feet, my chin held high despite the pit in my stomach, intending to see him to the door.

“You do realize I could alert the authorities and have the place shut down by tomorrow.”

I had a sudden urge to hit him, which said a lot. I wasn’t typically violent. “You could, but that would make you a complete asshole. Which would make you way worse than Tom the pussy.”

A smile tugged on his lips. “You’re not quitting your job at the firm.”

“If you threaten me again, I will.” I had enough people threatening me in my life. I didn’t need my boss doing so, too.

His icy eyes shifted to my lips. Lips which still tingled from his kiss.

“Come work for me on the weekends.”

“I hardly work for you during the weekdays. What would I do?”

“I don’t know yet. But I’d find something.”

Again, it was tempting, but I couldn’t leave Teagan on her own. “I appreciate the offer, but no.”

His lips pressed together. “What is the money for?” he persisted.

“How did you lose your leg?” I don’t know what prompted me to go tit for tat. But I thought if he demanded I spill my guts, he could do the same.

He shook his head. “My injury has nothing to do with this situation.”

“You’re wrong. You want me to confide in you. Fine. Confide in me. Tell me something personal.”

“I’m not having a conversation about my leg. I’m trying to help you.”

There was no way I’d involve my boss in my personal shit. I was handling the situation. In a few more months, I would be free of the debt I owed, beholden to no one else in the process. He already had one woman after his money; he didn’t need another one asking for a handout. “I didn’t ask for your help, Aiden. You should go.”

Although there was a flash of disappointment in his expression, his jaw clenched, and he walked away.

The next morning, I realized dealing with my boss was bound to be awkward. When I went into his office for our morning meeting, I had to keep myself from blushing. I’d climaxed on top of him, had him threaten my livelihood, and refused his offer to help me. And here he was looking completely unaffected. As if last night hadn’t happened at all.

“I have two calls today, but otherwise it should be quiet.”

“Okay. Is there anything I can work on?” If I didn’t have something to do, I’d go crazy. Crazy thinking about the way he’d kissed me. Crazy replaying my first orgasm ground out on top of him. Perhaps I needed to take a cue from Teagan and buy a battery-operated friend. My body was way too ready for a repeat performance.

“You could take care of the expense from last night.” He handed over the restaurant receipt.

Not my favorite task, but I’d take it. “Sounds good.”

“Great.”

I was being dismissed. No mention of last night. No acknowledgement of the intimate moment. Nothing. I should have been relieved, especially if it meant he’d stay out of my business. But instead, I found myself oddly disappointed. Perhaps in my inexperience, I’d read too much into our private lap dance. Maybe I’d been projecting my attraction while he’d only been going through the motions.

By Thursday, I wondered if I’d imagined the entire thing. Aiden had been cool. Almost unapproachable. Unable to stand it any longer, I went into his office with his lunch and didn’t simply turn around to leave once he said “thank you.”

“Did you need something?” he asked.

Whatever comfort we’d been easing into had evaporated. As if normal conversation with smiles and laughter had never happened. It sucked. I could remain professional, but this freeze-out was torture. He was barely talking to me. “Are you still angry I won’t agree to work for you on the weekends?”

No reaction. Not one flicker in his eyes, not one tick in his jaw. “No. I’m not.”

Perhaps it had been a mistake to discuss this in the office. But since I’d brought up the elephant in the room, I pushed for more. “You won’t report the club?”
