Amusement lit her eyes. Finishing up the last bite and putting the wrapper to the side, she assumed a serious demeanor. “I’d be happy to interview you for the position of roommate. Tell me about your experience, Mr. Samuels.”

My grin came easily. It was impossible to forget the first time I’d met her, looking absolutely beautiful and nervous across from my desk. “I have experience with purchasing McDonald’s cheeseburgers and am proficient in providing them for Sundays and special occasions such as homecomings.”

“Interesting. Are you opposed to always being shirtless while delivering them?”

“I have no objections. Also, I’m known to keep plenty of bacon and beer in the fridge for BLTs on demand.”

“How are your cooking skills?”

“Chicken parmesan is pretty good, and I’m adept at finding new ways to please you in the kitchen, as well as other areas of the apartment.”

She was trying to remain serious despite my double entendre, but her lip twitch gave her away. “I see. Take me through how you envision a typical day.”

“For starters, I plan on waking up with you each morning.” I took her hand and kissed her knuckles. “Then taking showers together. Making our coffee and lunches in the kitchen and talking about what time we’ll each be home. Cooking you dinner or ordering in each night—maybe both if the cooking doesn’t go well. Bringing you snacks and caffeine while you study. Probably distracting you without meaning to because I won’t ever get enough of touching you. Then going to bed with you every night, feeling like the luckiest guy on the planet for having you in my arms.”

“That’s, um, that’s some day. And what about your skills?”

“Excellent at oral.”

She grinned. “I seem to have some memories of your skill set but may need a demonstration to refresh my memory. With the beard, of course.”

“Of course. Does that mean I have the position?”

“Yes. But you should know my rules for this to be successful.”

Leave it to her to remember I’d said the same to her. “Lay them on me.”

“First, I expect honesty at all times. If you’re having a rough day and prefer not to talk about it, then tell me instead of pushing me away. I can’t go through it again as it hurts too much.”

“There’s never a promise I’ve meant more when I say I will be honest and open with you.”

“Rule two, I’m paying half the rent.”

“No way. You’re going to school.”

“Yes, I am. And working full-time, and paying half the rent.” The stubborn line of her lips let me know she wasn’t budging on this rule.

“I’ll agree, but if you’re splitting half the rent, then you’re not paying me anything else on the ten thousand you seem to think you still owe me. Compromise can be rule three.”

Her smile was contagious. “Okay. I agree to rule three about compromise. Now then, rule four: I expect lots of personal talk, including chitchat.”

“I’ve come to adore chitchat. At least yours. Everyone else, not so much. I love you, Chloe, and I want us to start a life together here in LA.”

She kissed my lips softly. “I want that, too, Aiden.”

It wasn’t long before the kiss turned into a full make-out session. I whispered in her ear, “Do I get the position?”

“Mm-hm. Can you start immediately?”

“Right now, in fact. Are you ready for a demonstration of my oral skills?”

She laughed when I made my way south. “I thought you’d never ask.”

Epilogue

Chloe

“Welcome home, beautiful,” came Aiden’s voice from the kitchen.
