With a deep breath of confidence, I brushed my feelings aside as I approached them.Don’t think about it, don’t think about it, don’t—
“If this ruins things with Dakota, I swear to fucking God, Chase,” Kaden said as I slipped my arm around his and his body tensed.
With a clenched jaw of frustration, he looked down at me but when our gazes met, his hard eyes softened.
“What are we talking about?” I innocently asked, glancing between him and Chase.
They both seemed reluctant, and even though I knew exactly why, I didn’t speak. I simply needed to hear this from them.
“Go ahead without me,” Chase said to Kaden and he nodded, placing a firm hand on my lower back.
He indicated for me to walk and I did so, feeling a knot of nervousness form in my stomach. So he isn’t going to tell me?
He was silent the entire walk, and we finally reached a large door. It was guarded by two freakishly buff security men.
When their gazes fell on Kaden, one stepped aside and the other unlocked the door with a code. He opened the door and Kaden motioned for me to head inside.
I entered the dim lit room. Expensive cologne, strong whiskey and cigar smoke immediately drifting into my nose.
After Kaden stepped in behind me, the door closed and I nearly froze seeing a group of men sitting around a black poker table. Two of them had women standing behind them—conversing with each other.
Their gazes landed on me fast and sharp, and my stomach dropped.
As soon as I met Logan’s gaze, he shifted his chair back, not tearing his eyes from me.
Wordlessly, I walked over, having a seat on his left leg and two of the men grinned, one chuckled, and the other shook his head.
“You sure you want to split your attention?” he asked Logan and his gravelly voice startled me. Grey stubble trailed along his jaw, and the silver tooth in his grin caught the light.
“Thanks for making it easier for us, sweetheart,” another man sent a wink my way before lifting his cigar back to his lips and my heart raced. What am I making easy for them?
Kaden pouring himself a drink with a cigar between his lips caught my attention and I studied him for a second.
He must’ve felt me staring because he leaned back against the edge of the table, eyes locking with mine
Logan’s hand firmly slipped around my waist and his grip tightened, making me look down.
“All in,” one of the men said and Logan’s hand slipped to the top of my thigh.
A deadly silence fell over the room, and it was as though you could hear a pin drop. One by one, the men folded.
I had never played poker before, so I genuinely had no clue what was going on and why the tension was so thick and heavy.
Their cards were turned and slowly, the room filled with soft gasps by the women, and a few curse words from the men.
It was Logan’s turn, and I watched the man across from him hold his stare. An eerie chill crawled up my spine in anticipation. Logan revealed his cards and the arrogance of the man in front of him vanished, instantly replaced by fury.
“Jesus Christ,” one of the men groaned, grabbing his drink as he threw his head back, downing the entire thing.
The man beside Logan gave him an approving nod and I shifted on his lap, making his grip on my thigh tighten.
“I can’t tell, did you win?” I whispered to Logan and a grin formed on his lips.
Two of the men chuckled, looking at each other and I noticed a third man run his fingers up and down his jaw as he kept his eyes on Logan’s cards.
“Maybe next time,” Logan said to the man across the table, and I didn’t miss the tick in his jaw.
“One day, Hale. One day,” was all he said as he got to his feet.
