Evangeline wondered if poor Miss Bastion wasn’t all that happy about her betrothal. From the looks of Mr. Northcott and Miss Scranton, they could barely wait to get on with their lives together. Marriage hadn’t been a joy for Evangeline, but she truly hoped it would be for that day’s bride and groom.

“I have to wonder why we were invited today,” Evangeline confided in the other woman, turning the topic.

Miss Adams almost snorted and gestured toward two men on the other side of the room.

“I suspect the bride has turned her hand to matchmaking.”

Eve stared at the other woman wondering if she had lost her mind. “What do the two things have to do with one another?”

Miss Adams again gestured discretely toward the two men Eve didn’t know. “Those two gentlemen are friends of Mr. Northcott’s. She called them scholars when she introduced me. Seems likely she wants to match them up so she doesn’t have them on her hands overlong.”

Evangeline frowned. She wanted to argue. She didn’t know the bride well but she didn’t seem to be the mean-spirited sort. But really, what did Eve know on any of the matters? She wished she could extricate herself from the conversation but wasn’t sure how. Thankfully, she was saved from further discomfort by the return of the bride who had changed into her travelling attire. They would be travelling to their new home together that afternoon.

Everyone gathered around to wish the newlyweds joy and bliss. Evangeline didn’t have to deal with the other woman’s questionable temper any longer. But she couldn’t help casting a couple admiring glances toward the handsome scholars Miss Adams had indicated.
