“Because …”
“But I thought we … Do you not?” My voice was a whimper.
How could I have possibly read things so wrong?
“It’s not that,” Kiel said, looking away, refusing to stare at me for long. “But you mustn’t say it. You mustn’t let yourself feel it. Not for me. Never me.”
“Why not? We freed a shard of Fate. She’s out there now. Lycaonus is not dead, but he’s probably trapped under the mountain for some time. Arcadus’ Nehringi is dead and buried with him. We’re not immediately under threat. I’m not being torn apart from the inside by the power of a goddess. For once, things are going our way. Why can’t I be happy with you, Kiel?”
He sighed heavily. “Because my name isn’t Kiel. Not really.”
My eyes narrowed. “What do you mean it’s not? What’s your name?”
His blue eyes finally landed on me, hooking my gaze and not flinching as he answered.
“You can’t fall in love with me … because my real name, is Callistus.”
Callistus. Alpha of the Callis. The ninth Alpha. The Betrayer.
And he was the man I’d fallen for.
To be continued.
