“Hey, are you two staying for a drink?” Levi asked.
Jordan didn’t hesitate before shaking his head. “Not me. But if you want to stay, Lex, don’t let me stop you.”
“How about we go home instead?” I suggested. I didn’t want Jordan to be around anything that might make him stray off the straight path he’d adopted.
He buried his head into the crook of my neck. “I hoped you’d say that. Let me get my stuff.”
Within the hour, we were back at our flat. When Jordan had left the clinic, he ummed and aahed about whether to find his own place to live rather than go back to the house he’d shared with Levi, Jude, and Robbie for so long. He wanted a fresh start, and the place held a lot of unwanted memories of his relapse. It hadn’t taken much for me to suggest he moved in with me. I’d still be out on tour with bands, so he’d have time on his own, and we could enjoy a proper relationship when I was home.
So far, it had worked well.
When we got back to the flat, Jordan had a shower and I downed a glass of wine. He was totally fine with me drinking, but I didn’t want to do anything in front of him which might set him back. As a result of his time away, he’d chosen to stay clear of alcohol as well, for a while a least.
“So, how did you feel up there tonight?” I asked once we were snuggled up on the sofa together, music playing in the background. “You were phenomenal.”
Jordan kissed the top of my head. “Pretty damn good. The best I’ve felt in a long time, but I’m tired of doing comeback tours. I want to write music, release it, and then tour it. End of.”
“You have plenty of great new material. I don’t see why that wouldn’t be an option.”
He pulled away from me, straightening up and looking directly into my eyes. “I’m glad you think that because I’m going to talk to Kelvin about going on the road again. I’ve got all this pent-up energy that I know can be channelled correctly doing gigs and shows.”
I bit my lip. “But what about all the temptations?”
“Babe, with you around, there is no other temptation I need.” He grinned.
“Oh, good answer.”
“I still haven’t thanked you properly for sticking by me.” Jordan grabbed my hand. “I was an absolute shit in the lead-up to that night, and you didn’t deserve any of it. You had every right to walk away.”
I couldn’t deny that it was something I had thought about. How things might have been very different if I had cut him out of my life. But if I had, we wouldn’t be sitting there having this conversation. “I considered it, but then I realised how much I loved you, and if I walked away, how was that going to do you any good?”
His grip on my hand increased.
“There’s something I want to ask you, Lex.”
My heart jumped into my throat. “Go on,” I managed, wondering what the hell was coming next. We had never spoken about the future properly, marriage and kids. And I wasn’t sure that was what I wanted. At least not in the short term.
“Will you… will you be our tour manager again?”
It was the easiest yes I’d ever said.
