“Traffic.”

“That’s why you should have taken the subway.”

“Next time,” I said impatiently.

“I took the liberty of handing over all the information I’d collected over the past few days,” Frank informed me the moment I entered the room.

I nodded and introduced myself to the officers. The taller cop was called Barnes, and the blue-eyed female cop was called Avery.

“We’ve gone over all the information that your detective handed over, sir,” Avery told me.

“And?” I asked. “Is it enough?”

“Coupled with the restraining order you have against Sofia Burton, it’s definitely enough,” she said. But I noticed she exchanged a pointed glance at her colleague, and it made me take pause.

“Do you anticipate any problems?” I asked.

“No, sir,” Barnes replied quickly.

I looked at Avery. “I’m aware that Sofia Burton is part of New York society’s elite. And I also know that her father has made several donations and contributions to many different places within the city… this station being one of them. But the law is the law.”

“The law is the law, sir.” Avery nodded. “But you might want to get yourself a lawyer all the same.”

I nodded. “I’m pressing charges.”

Avery nodded. “Mr. Shrewry here informed us of that decision already.”

“We’ll need you to answer some questions for us and fill out some paperwork,” Officer Avery informed me. “After that, you’re free to go.”

It took me another hour and a half before everything was done. Frank stayed with me the whole time and by the end of it, I was tired and ready to put this whole thing behind me.

“You’ll keep me informed as to what happens next?” I asked, turning to Officer Avery.

“Of course, sir.” She nodded. “We have your contact information.”

Frank and I left the station, and I breathed a sigh of relief. “That’s that,” I said.

“I wouldn’t celebrate just yet,” Frank said.

“I’m not celebrating,” I said. “I’m just thankful that we’ve finally nailed her down. There’s no way she can squirm out of this one.”

“Oh, I don’t know about that,” Frank said, with a shrug.

“What do you mean?”

“I’m just saying… we need to be prepared for anything.”

I bit my lip, wishing there was some way I could make sure that Sofia could never come near my family or me ever again. I felt so incredibly powerless that it made me physically nauseous.

“Thank you, Frank,” I said, turning to him. “I really appreciate everything you’ve done.”

Frank dipped his head in acknowledgment.

“You’ll set up your payment with my secretary,” I said. “You can expect to receive it within the next three working days.”

“Thank you.” Frank nodded. “Good luck, Reed.”

He walked away in the direction of the subway and I stood on the steps of the station, savoring the knowledge of knowing that Sofia would be taken into custody soon. She wouldn’t have time to stalk my family or me anymore. I was about to head towards my car when my phone started ringing. I looked at the screen, but it was an unknown number. Unsure, I answered the call anyway.
